Hi Guys

I just had a text from the BSJA to say that VOSA will be turning up at shows to check people are 'lorry legal' (driver hours, tacho etc). Apparently they are targeting Hickstead during Derby week. You have been warned!

I just got that to

vosa will also have people with them to check you have your horses passport, be warned, the horse fraternity, are now, "the easy target" as there are less LGV's on the road, due to the credit crunch. If anyone thinks I am exageratting, just speak to any LGV driver in any layby, transport cafe, or garage anywhere... you will NOT get away with anything. They also have more powers than the police, you cannot ignore them, please do not try to do so. I am not only a horse owner, but the wife of an ex haulage contractor.

So what happens if your passport is with the PIO being updated (change of ownership) and is taking ages...and you have entered SJ at the weekend which involves a lorry trip?

And does the driving hours issue affect lorries that come into the category above 3.5 tonnes but below LGV level?

Thanks!

If your lorry is under 7.5 tonnes and is for private use it should be tacho exempt - i think there may aslo be an age limit on this though, Mine is M reg & i fill out a form each year for the plating so they don't check the calibration of the Tacho.
Roadworthyness is making sure all your lights work, tyres are not worn, there is nothing handing off or dangerous, that sort of thing. They have the power to dip your tank to make sure you are not running on red diesel.
At present my understanding is that if your lorry is private HGV & under the 7.5 tonnes then the driver hours do not apply.
I would suggest as a matter of good habit that you should photocopy the passport before you send it off, so you can show the horse has one & get the PIO to acknowledge thier recipt of it, so you can show it has gone to them.

need to get letter (or email) from issuing authority re your passport, or do not risk travel, re your lorry weight OH (ex contractor) not sure re British laws....suggested you speak to VOSA office to get clarification (on paper!!). Over here (N.I.), test centre was in disagreement with VOSA as to whether 7.5 lorry should have tacho. Lorry was pulled over leaving point to point, driver was told should not be driving, as drivers licence (just renewed) did not have LGV 1 permission. OH went out to drive lorry home, DVLA had made mistake, but as per tacho, still in adjucation. WHAT A MESS.

And what about the new mirrors - I measured my cab and thought I was exempt, and it wasn't picked up when I had the lorry plated, but I am not totally sure I understood the new rule.

Anyone able to clarify?

If its newer than jan 2000 and over 3.5 ton you will need the kerb mirror ( on top of pass door looks down) and a new wide angle mirror on pass side with the normal mirror both need to be latest spec , there are some exemptions for low cab hights but dont think this is applicable as most horseboxes have standard cabs... about £80 for the two mirrors on mercedes atego for instance.... hope this helps

Make sure you ahve every single thing with you.
Would be horrable if these stupid regulations put a downer on anyones much earned show days.

I'm not sure if it is law or not, but when we got pulled over by VOSA they also questioned us over whether we were carrying water for the livestock (which we were). They also weighed us, which was rather nerve wracking!
