Hello,

I have been offered a very nice horse...it's won £854 BSJA. What is the lowest level I could compete at without going HC?

Would I be allowed to enter the 'Open' section of Newcomers when it's split Newcomers / Open? Could I enter open 1 m 15s?

Just before Cat got ill, we were confident at Newcomers, had done one or two 1 m 15s & in lessons we were jumping 1 m 20s / 1 m 25s. I don't want to consider this fab horse if I'm going to be too far out of my comfort zone.

I've tried the BSJA website, but I find it very hard to get any useful information out of it.

I think that is Grade B although might be wrong you are certainly out of all classes up to and including Fox.

You can do the open classes and the Amature classes. Basically if you wanted to you could jump 90cm so I wouldn't worry about having nothing to jump.

You can enter any Opens you want - be it 85cms or 1.40ms

Also all of the amateur classes too - enjoy!

Okayyy,

So I'd be all right for a bit & could jump opens...but what about if I won enough to get up to grade B? I won't have much headroom...

I presume I'd have to retire to dressage... I'm only an amateur 1-horse rider who works f/t in an office, & wouldn't want to go chasing round the country after grade B classes...

Am I the only one who finds that the rule book goes into the most tremendous detail on some points...but you can't find out, in plain English, the stuff you really WANT to know... And the website is hopeless.

Right, firstly you need to find out if the £845 winnings is Notional or Actual !

If it is Notional then the comments above apply....you can jump ANY open section at ANY height, and still jump Grade C qualifiers etc...

If it is Actual, then you need to find out what the Notional winnings are. They will definitely be less than or equal to the Actual winnings and on that basis you can then work out what you are eligible for.

For guidance, the limits are as follows :

Grade A - £2000 and over
Grade B - £1000 to £1999
Grade C - £0 to £999
Foxhunter - £0 to £600
Newcomers - £0 to £300
Discovery - £0 to £175
British Novice - £0 to £100

You also have a few 'Open' qualifiers :

Blue Chips - Star Qualifier (1.10m)
Scope - Members Cup (1.15m)
Scope - High Offley Stud (1.30m)
Amateur Champs (90cm, 1m, 1.10m and 1.20m)

You will certainly not be short of classes to jump....especially if you are prepared to jump 1.10m upwards

Oh yes, I'd forgotten all about notional vs actual!

I wish the BSJA had a simplified guide which actually told you how the system works - the rule book seems to assume that everyone knows the system inside out & just want to check the petty little details like how big your sponsor's logo is allowed to be...

From your posts, you seem quite doubtful about taking this horse on and maybe, if this is the case, you should think twice? There could be quite a lot of pressure for you and it sounds as if you have plenty of other things going on in your life.
Whatever you decide, good luck!

Not doubtful about the horse - I really want it! But there'd be no point in buying it and then suddenly finding that I couldn't compete it...

I totally want to compete at a higer level - but when I'm ready!!
