As the title suggests I'm looking at getting my mare the Bucas buzz off zebra rug. She is very sensitive to flies being a grey. The other choice is premier equine. Does anyone have any advice??
Do you find the belly flap hangs to low?
Are you worried your horse will get a hoof caught inside it, as mine did! I found the rug in the field. He would have been charging around in the field trying to get the rug off as 3 off the elastics broke (where the clips are) on the belly flap. I am lucky he did not fall in the ditch in the field and break a leg or something!
I am having trouble getting a refund. The retailer who I purchased the rug from sent the rug back to Bucas and they are saying it's the first one they have ever had returned! Even the shop assistant in the shop said that the one on the model horses' belly flap hung down low. My horse is a shire x cob and they are saying that I have incorrectly fitted the rug! I know I have not - it's just that there is NO adjustment on the belly flap and my horse suffers with an itchy belly from the midges which I why I purchased the rug in the first place! All week I have been phoning the retailer, the middle company and Bucas; they all pass the buck. Then today they sent the rug back to me saying that they are confident they have not sold me a faulty rug! Can't believe it! Has anyone out there had trouble with Bucas? I paid £97 plus postage for this rug!
Also after only 2 washes on a 30 degree wash the zebra stripes are fading. Trading Standard have told me that 'under the sale of goods act 1979 as amended the rug is not of satisfactory quality and not fit for purpose'. I agree. It may be fine if your horse does not suffer from the midges, but then you would not need a rug! I paid on my credit card and I think they will take up my case. Buyer's beware! Let me know if you have had trouble with Bucas please. This will help my case. Thank you xx
I am finding that nearly all of my recent horse rugs purcheses (different makes) need the surcingles shortening before I can use them (I have to sew them shorter, as even on the shortest adjustment they are too long and therefore dangerous). I guess the Bucas is also styled for obese horses.
My horse is a shire x cob too. I had an issue with the rug blowing over her hind quarters and twisting. I contacted Bucas directly and they sent me a smaller belly pad and leg straps and that solved the issue. They asked for a photo of the problem which I 'recreated' on the yard so it was safe and a picture of the general fit. I've had no problems since.
I went to Hickstead today courtesy of the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust , I saw this rug cost £ 30 is lovely and light and fits my boy well, much cheaper than buccus which I found the material very hard, this is soft. What do you think???
Just received the bucas buzz off and I think it's really good. The tummy flap was very close to his skin ( closer than surcingles would be so not worried about him catching his leg), covers all his tummy and the rug itself fits really well and covers everywhere. Only thing is there's a browband thing that keeps the neck up but that inevitably doesn't stay on, but as my horse is mainly bitten and allergic round his tummy this doesn't worry me too much. The neck still covered most of him, just didn't go right up to behind his ears. We have a £30 fly rug too and it's a complete waste of money and basically a false economy. Hope this helps. 😄
I brought a rug from cornerstones off ebay and the rug is pretty great but im another with surcingle problems I have had to knot the hind legs until I get a chance to sew (which I am going to do when the rain stop) BUT yesterday in the field found paddy had scratched all his leg from when I guess he sat down the thing caught him. but over all it has been ok, not slipped the face mask on it is pointless as it does not cover his eyes or ears and just rubs come back to me in Sept and see who he survived summer lol
My horse had the Maxima rug for 2 weeks. Holes appeared in the neck cover after only 2 days of wear! Then the neck cover came unstitched (3" length). Ebay were brilliant. I got a refund as I did not think the rug was tough enough for horses. It may be OK if you just want it to keep the flies off if your horse does not suffer from midge/fly bites. (Then would you buy a fly rug)? If your horse is a sweet itch sufferer with the dorsal feeders or the ventral feeders (there is no belly flap to protect your horses belly from the flies);this rug would not be tough enough. I agree it is lovely and lightweight.
I bought the Equidor Nevada fly rug off ebay last week as a cheap experiment to see if mine will tolerate a belly cover (very quirky horse).
He has absolutely destroyed his Rambo protector by kicking and kicking at the surcingles (not matter how tight or loose they are, we have tried every combination of crossing the 3 surcingles too) until he got them all off. eventually my sis sewed leg strap loops on it and he wore it with 1 surcingle and leg straps, worked, but hardly ideal to have to modify such a £££££ rug!
He's had the equidor a week anda half and apart from having to shorten the belly flap by about 6/8 inches(!!!seriously, are all rugs made for morbidly obese horses these days) its working well, mesh is lovely and soft without being static-y and the fit is fine for the money. Neck cover and tail flap could be a bit longer but as being as the belly flap is still in one piece i aint complaining lol!
for a super budget rug i wouldnt hesitate to reccomend this.
