Bucas fly rugs

Hi all,

I was wondering whether anyone else had had similar experiences with their bucas fly rugs. I purchased the buzz off rain (zebra) fly rug at badminton this year and since putting it onto my mare it seems to be rubbing her wither - her fur always looked roughed up whenever I take it off and her mane has slightly thinned when wearing it. I take the rug off everyday and adjust it etc but something's just not sitting right with me. I've never had another rug do that to her before, I don't know whether it's the crisscross fabric on the inside of the rain sheet bit which is doing it or whether it looks worse than it is as she's not lost any fur - the hair just looks ruffled. I don't know whether it's going to get worse or this is the worse it's going to get... I just don't want her losing any fur and being uncomfortable etc due to it rubbing. Hope that makes sense... Anyone have any similar experiences? I don't know whether to call it quits and buy her an amigo/Rambo/weatherbeeta which I know fits her really well. Just slightly gutted as I've heard such good reviews about the bucas rugs.

Hi, it is years since I had a Buccas, so can't advise on that model. But, if I use Jay's Shires rain sheet/fly rug when it is warm it will rub his mane too, and it fits perfectly and he is fine in it when the weather is chilly. Covering the manes seems to thin them if they are too hot.

Jay is a thin skinned chap, and it has been warm enough that even when it has rained recently he has been fine in a fly sheet that is not waterproof.

Other than that, rather than just stopping using the rug and buying another I would line the wither area with something smooth.

If the fit is good (they can be a bit slim fitting for some horses), try using a bossy's bib under it.
