Hi am going to get the bucas power turnout rug for my mare and just wanted opinions on whether to go for the light or the extra?

They both seem to have similar upper range of temp that they are ok to use for, but the lower end is much higher with the extra.

Anyone got any experience with these rugs who can advise?

Also sizing wise she's a 16hh fairly fine Hannoverian x TB she measures up at 6ft and a PE 6ft fits brilliantly, weatherbeeta, horsewear etc all need to be 6'3ft to fit. How does bucas compare?

Thanks :)

Sorry - cant edit, obviously when I say a higher lower temp I actually mean lower, lower temp (extra goes to -25 rather than -15)

None of that made any sense did it - sorry I should clearly go back to sleep! Hopefully someone will understand what I'm going on about!

These are the best rugs I've ever used! Up until this season have had over ten years of medium weight Fal, and Heavy Rambo, putting extras under the Rambo when seriously cold (ie snow on the ground). This winter one ISH has lived out in the Power, no underrugs, no loss of condition. The skinny minnie TB has lived out all winter in the Power, upgrading to Power plus when the snow came. He actually looks better now than he did in the Autumn, and both horses are fully clipped. It certainly takes away the concerns ' Omg, it's gone up a few degrees, need to change rugs'. I think if you have a horse inclined to run up light/out 24/7, I'd err on the Extra side, with the neck cover. Also remember, one neck cover will fit all the rugs. :)

She's only out during the day, but does lose weight easily so I want her to keep warm but not hot! I was kinda erring on the side of the extra, but maybe that's overkill!!

I want both really, but my bank balance doesn't!

Saw them properly for the first time at Royal Windsor, and was very impressed. We had a new horse, and buying the Bucas actually saved us money! We would have paid around £200 for the Fal medium weight, and £250 for the Rambo heavyweight. As it was , we paid £250 for the Power turnout, and neck cover, which has covered the whole winter weather changes :)

I recently bought two of the light versions for my arabs off ebay. I got them for a good price - £120 each brand new (last 2 that the saddlery had luckily in my horses sizes!).

I'm really pleased with them and the extra version would definitely be too much for my arabs but they are only out in the day and are unclipped.

I think they are great, so much more comfortable for the horses to wear than big heavy layers.

Size wise my boy takes a 6'3" which is what he takes in most rug makes, although I think Bucas are slightly more generous than PE.

My horses live out 24/7 and one of them has a Power Lite which saw him through the previous two winters with all the snow and ice around with no problems. My favourite rugs are the old style Viking FALs but these come a very close second.

I have both. The extra is a very good rug, but I would never want to leave my horse in it if the temp was above 10C. Having said that the light has no fill, so rarely use it below 10C.

Essentially I use the light as a autumn / spring rug and the extra as the winter rug.

My horse is a particularly cold horse, hence why I use two.

....I actually have a middleweight one too!!!

Thanks for the replys - I've got a 6ft Bucas Celtic rug just arrived at work :) will try it on her and check the sizing before taking the plunge and getting the power (probably the light)! I have just had a bit of a rug buying spree though (not my fault - all excellent deals in the sale that I couldn't turn down) so I might have to wait until next month for this purchase!!
