Morning,

Thinking of trying a bucas rug for my ponies. I have trouble with most rugs as although they have small necks they have big shoulders. I've tried ruggles, shires, weatherbeeta (standard and freestyle) and Amigos (bravos not mios) all of which rub their shoulders. From the pictures it appears that the bucas rugs might have more shoulder room?!

Anyone have any experience? Cake for all :)

My chestnut mare has a couple of Bucas rugs (Smartex Rain and an Irish) and they fit her well. She is a narrow shouldered Anglo-arab and although she does have a bit of extra room at the shoulders, the neck holes fit snugly. Neither rug has adjustment at the chest, like Horseware, but they are older rugs so maybe the designs have changed?

I'm sure I read that Bucas were good for big shouldered horses, but I've not tried them myself. I have Fal and PE for my chunky boys and they're great.

I think the high neck is their version of a wug or 1/2 neck. The new designs are slightly different as mine don't have the 'click and go' fastenings.

I'll add a conformation photo of my mare to my album in my profile for you to look at. :)

I have also found a photo of her in the Smartex Rain, so I added that to the album. :)

ETA- my Bucas rugs are the standard neck size, not the 'big neck' for chunkier horses.

Thanks Faracat, very useful. Looks like plenty of room around the shoulders in grazing pic. How big is mare and what rug size is she? She's very beautiful :D

Annagain I have considered PE too bug from the ones I've seen they seem rather big in the neck? Not thought of Fal, I'll go investigate :)

I've not really noticed them being big in the neck but my two are rather hippo like all over so I probably wouldn't notice. Fal rugs have always fitted mine perfectly and I would still be buying Fal rugs now if they were still British made but since they switched production overseas, the quality has dropped considerably - unlike the prices which are still increasing

I have a 14hh cob mare and she is good in her Bucas stable rug and her rainsheet (both normal neck and 6' rugs). I also have the fly rug, however, it is rubbing her round the neck and gets tight on her shoulders - it seems to be slipping back as it looks OK at first - which is a pity as a great fly rug which has protected her well. She is very chunky and has very well muscled shoulders. I think her Rambo rugs give her more room in her shoulders and the v-closure is more forgiving (in my experience). The PE rugs were too deep for her (and too heavy). Weatherbeater slips back and strangles her. So I've stopped experimenting (sold all the ones that don't work) and now just get Rambo - thankfully she is very good with her rugs!

I've just gone down the "Big Horse Shop" route after trying lots of different brands. I have a IDxTB who is massive in the shoulder department, has a high wither but has a normal sized bum. I tried Weatherbeeta, Amigo XL (not bad but a bit baggy round the chest), Premier Equine and none were right.

The BHS rug fits well. I went for the 0g new Epic with a detachable hood. That way I can put liners in it. https://www.thebighorseshop.co.uk/new-improved-epic-classic-no-fill-rug

I have a bucas fly rug and a couple of turnouts - Smartex I think. They are really well made rugs and mine have the click and go type front fastening which is lovely - no gaping at the front of the rug, everything stays fastened. They are very warm rugs. However, the one major flaw is that they don't appear to be self righting. When my horse has had a good roll the rug always moves to one side, then the leg straps start to cut into her legs because they've been pulled to the side. I've tried them with and without the legs straps but the rugs just aren't self righting. I stick with Rambo rugs now.

A friend of mine has Bucas rugs and I have had to re-arrange them several times as they seem to slip on her horse as well
