Can anyone help me with Bucas rugs, please? - just bought a Smartex turnout and need to order a neck cover. I'm wondering if I could use the neck cover from any of their turn-out rugs or are the fittings different?

Many thanks for advice!

I have a few different Bucas rugs including smartex and I swap the necks around between them. They all fit but they're all less than 3 years old with two thick bands of Velcro - one each side of the withers. I think the older ones have a different attachment system.

Can I ask if you guys are happy with the smartex? Trying to decide between one of these or a rambo - can anyone give me an honest comparison?

I'm very happy with mine. I have the Smartex rain and also the Smartex extra. My horses get their first clip September then the rain goes on until it drops to about 5/6 degrees consistently then the heavy weight goes on. I like the fit with the generous shoulder and they're not too deep so don't get too caked in mud. The front fastening is v secure and the rugs don't slip ( mine are quite easy on rugs though) .But the best bit is the fleece lining which dries the wettest horse in about half an hour.

I haven't had a rambo so can't give you a comparison with those though.

Thanks, Attie, that's really helpful, just thinking then I can order the best value neck cover I can find! - the Smartex is quite new so should be ok with a new neck cover.

I haven't yet tried the rug apart from trying it on but I love it so far, in that my horse will not be fully clipped and lives out, and if the Smartex does what it claims, I don't need to worry about him being turned out slightly damp. Seems like a very well made, well-fitting rug.

Compared to Rambo, can't say much other than different fit, I'd say - less deep?

Cross-posted there, sorry, hope that still makes sense!!

Mine are fully clipped and if I've had a really wet ride, like today, I just put the rug on immediately and it dries off nicely and keeps warm. I rarely put a stable rug on at night in the winter as I tend to ride mornings so I just keep the Smartex on when they come in and overnight... so far not had any rubs or problems. Often second hand neck covers on eBay..I find small and medium both fit fine- on 6' and 6'3 rugs.

I have the Smartex Rain and the Smartex Extra. Had them 3 years now - good rugs, love the snug, wrap over front fastening and they are high quality, well made rugs BUT... when they get wet, they're heavy as hell, my Smartex Rain isn't what I would call self-righting and I've had to go and straighten the rug a few times after my girl has rolled. They have leg straps... not keen on leg staps and although I love the front fastenings, she gets rug rubs and has to wear a bossy bib at all times.

I also has Rambo and Rhino rugs and for me, these rugs just have the edge over Bucas. Maybe not quite as well made but, they're light (even when wet) and very warm. Most importantly, they never rub my girl. Different rugs suit different horses - both good rugs but Rambo suits my mare better.

For turnout rugs I prefer Rambo. They are lighter and just nicer to handle.
I don't like the fleece inside the Bucas, I find it can pick up hair and make them a bit itchy.
I do have a full set of bucas stable rugs but I use a sheet to line them.
