Bucas rugs

Could anyone tell me how they come up size- wise? Are they decent quality? I remember them being more of the higher end rugs years ago.
My guy normally takes a 6ft but after losing a lot of weight his 6fts seem to hang on him around the shoulder and neck so not sure whether to get a 5ft9. It’s only a rainsheet I’m looking for.
 
I have them for my cob and big shouldered freisan x Welsh and they fit both beautifully. I have an Irish turnout for both so not the super fancy ones but very happy with then. Only thing is I sent one for washing and it came back a little smaller than it went but not sure if that was fault of rug or washer 🤔

Size wise mine are all 5'9 and length wise come up spot on. They way the neck is done the shoulders have a lot of room which suits mine as have big shoulders but equally isnt baggy and slip-backy on less big shouldered beasts :)
 
Like any rugs they will fit some horse shapes better than others, but from what you say it would be worth trying with yours.

I’ve only really used the Celtic stable rugs extensively (and a couple of turnouts) and in terms of fit I’d say they are true to size in length, moderate in depth and they are cut reasonably high at the wither (so they didn’t pull back, which I hate) but are generously tailored over the shoulder for free movement. I’d guess the horses that possibly wouldn’t suit them are those real chunks with thick necks.

I’m not a huge fan of the stay dry lining option, which is essentially fleece and I found it got itchy over time.

Like Horseware etc they have different ranges, premium-budget - the premium have all been superb quality.
The budget - I had an Irish light turnout and it was poor and fell to pieces. As did the 2 x sun shower I had.

If you are thinking cheaper I’d say that the 1200d Rambo Amigo range is far better

Ah I tried an amigo years ago and it just didn’t fit anywhere. He was considerably larger then though. Weatherbeetas used to fit well before they brought out the newer range and they just hang on him too. I’m not sure which bucas rug it is I’ve seen, I’ll go have another look.

Might be worth trying an amigo again, they have really improved the range.
Avoid the cheap 600d amigos though - Mio, some of the Hero’s
 
Amigo do an XL range which fits my big shouldered cob perfectly (as do the older Westherbeeta style).

I have a Bucas for my square shouldered Welsh and it’s a lovely rug, really light to handle and well fitting.

I’ve just had a look at that one, it looks quite smart. Would you pick that over a premier equine? I only picked the bucas as it was on sale and seemed a good brand. Originally looking for a premier equine or something substantial.

You are asking the wrong person about that as I hate PE turnout rugs with a passion, so you will get a very biased answer 😂🙈

Haha. Out of interest why do you not like PE? I have the stormbuster I think it’s called and I find it really really heavy.
 
I really like the quality and have used different ones on a DWB, a Hanoverian and an ISH. Despite buying the big neck versions, I still don't find them particularly roomy for muscled horses. Rhino rugs seem to fit better for the horses I've used them on.
 
I had the Bucas zebra sweet itch rug and it fitted my Welsh cob terribly up front - way too tight over the chest and shoulders and the breast strap was positioned so high it practically strangled him when he put his head down. I would imagine they fit finer types ok but I can't recommend them for a cob or chunky type. I use Horseware rugs for mine.
 
I had quite a few bucas rugs for my lean,high withered TB,bucas & horseware rugs were the only brands that fit him. However after I lost him I’ve had to sell the lot as they were a rubbish fit on my new horse. He was about 16.1 & 6’6” in rugs,she’s only about 15.1 & is 6’6” as well but a chunky Connie cross & they just didn’t fit her😐
 
I think they are quite roomy. I get Bucas rugs for my pony as she is quite narrow in front and other makes hang down in a big exposed V at the front. I like the Bucas front fastening as it is snug across her chest. They are made to last too so worth the money.
 
Not sure if this helps but I bought a Rhinegold stable rug and tried it on- I could’ve easily have fitted another one of him in there it was so big. I’ve never had Rhinegold before so unsure how they compare size wise with any of the above? Thinking I definitely need to go a size down though from now on.
 
I have the Irish turnouts (and liners), and the 350g Smartex, I have found them excellent on a big shouldered ID x TB. They are waterproof and don't get heavy when wet. I don't know what the Freedom or select ranges are like though.

This is my experience too. Got worse as my (cob) mare muscled up, started to rub her shoulder as well as strangling her. Does the same on my new Welsh D. Pity, as they are nice rugs (I have the zebra fly rug, Celtic stable rug and sun shower rug). Now moved to just Rambo.
