Tried my mare in a Bucas Smartex full neck which appeared to be a great fit until I took it off 2 days later. I quickly realised it had rubbed and the tough front edge cut into her chest in spite of there being padding under the clips. I felt so guilty but it happened so quickly :( Has anybody else had problems with them? I don't want to give up as I really love the rug. I now have a bib in use with her normal Weatherbeeta Landa full neck which I have put back on again, seems like a backward step but at least the wound has dried up quickly and she isn't sore. I have a solution to keeping a wound on the chest dressed and covered too which my vet thought was brilliant! :)

I have one that is on its 3rd winter and it hasn't caused any rubs. The horse is quite a fine build and fits her well.
I had another more muscled DWB mare and it was too tight on the shoulders for her though.

My Bucas Smartex rubbed my mares shoulders. Use it with a bossy bib now and no further problems. Not had any problems with the fastening or clip area though. Hope your mare mends quickly :)

My mare gets rubbed by every rug she wears! Bossy's bib has sorted that out, they are brilliant. I've also got 2 Bucas Smartex turnouts and think they're great middle weight rugs. They stay waterproof for years and then make excellent stable rugs.

Can't believe it! Another Wiglet! :) :) That was my nickname when I was at school lol, I'm 53 now :) Thank-you for all the replies. Because it is such a lovely rug I am tempted to give it a try with a bib once she has healed up. The scrape is all dried up now but I felt like a dreadful owner, I'm sure you all understand. I buy a really "good" rug and it created a worse problem than her being cold :(

Mine is perfect in that its never rubbed but I do find that when's horse rolls which he does every morning it slips and won't straighten back up. I also find in very wet weather he's wet from his tummy to about half way up. Nor sure why but its never happened with any other rug.

Bossy bib. Also - how often do you check under your rug? as the way you posted makes it look like it was at least 2 days?

Don't worry, my ponies are checked every day! I am notorious for my fastidious nature. As my vet put it even when you are wearing familiar comfy shoes, sweaty feet or wet socks can cause blisters!! The floods in my area made the National news as we had more than a few drops of rain - that exacerbated the problem from when I left her at lunchtime, overnight rain and a wet morning. More to the point I had only put it on as her other rug was wet and I changed it! Poor son had to drive 5 miles to bring the other one down to the field as I was so upset and would NOT put it back on. ( My ponies live out 24/7 in an AONB so we have no stables or storage at the field!). Before I checked with the vet whether she may need antibiotics I had washed the wound with hibiscrub, dried it and applied fuciderm both of which were correct. She had bute for the pain and I fashioned a marvellous dressing by using a sling from my first aid kit which I tied around her neck neckerchief style with the pointed bit down which covered the wound perfectly. I used a clean white cotton tea towel folded over it, either side, secured it with tape and put the old faithful rug over the top. Next day wound perfectly clean, dressing changed and within 2 days completely dry!! Still in 2 minds whether to give the bucas another try lol :)

This made me smile. The care and ingenuity you used to treat her was lovely. After having a morning where I despaired at the fecklessness of some horse owners, you have redressed the balance. Thank you for that.

Just checking without accusing!

How about sewing a piece of sheepskin on the tough bit? on the inside? I have done that for one of my dogs rugs. She is a stafford with uber sensitive skin and managed to get rubs under her shoulders. Particularly galling as the dog rugs are a: blooming expensive b: she was only in it for a couple of hours. Anyway, the sheepskin has worked. Glued it first, then sewed it.
