Out for a quiet hack yesterday with a friend and her quiet cob and we decided to have a trot then gentle canter up the hill. my horse slightly in front and trotting well just about to go into canter and she bucked, unseated me then bucked again, and just kept bucking until she got me off. trotted away and then stopped to let me catch her.
Stood while I remounted and walked on as though nothing had happened.
It seemed a deliberate and successfull attempt at getting me off and was so sudden I couldnt get her head up,it has frightened me though as Im no spring chicken to be bouncing around the ground . Any advice would be helpful, ways of dealing with this etc, she did this once last summer and after that I was ready for her and she didnt try do it again but this came out of the blue so wasnt expecting it. she is a sec D X (dont know with what) and just 6 yrs old.

Is her saddle a good fit? Worst buck in my riding career which left me with a brokn arm was a saddle induced out of the blue one and you would not have sat it!

I had a similar experience last month when a horse fly bit the horse I was riding, except I half fell half jumped off & he kept on bucking whilst I was holding him!

I agree with all the checking her back, mouth, saddle, feed etc advice that you will get.

But sometimes it's just a plain bit of high spirits that starts the bucking and then it continues because once you are unbalanced naturally you tend to bang about a bit. Also some ponies (I had a lovely example of this as a teenager) will occasionally check the boundaries to see if they can move up the 'herd' pecking order "not sure if I feel like doing this today - lets see if I can get out of it". Of course once your off for any of these reasons they can feel insecure and want to be caught.

Identifying the reason helps to identify if the solution is to fix what's made them uncomfortable, accept it will happen occasionally and be ready for it, give a swift slap on the bum at any sign of it.

My horse did this to me in a lesson a few months ago and we found out that she had tweaked her back. I got a McTimoney practitioner out who fixed her up and she has not done it since. :)
