Some of my water buckets were left in the empty padocks over the winter and now have thck greem slime inside (yuk)! I have tried cleaning them with washing up liqued but not all of the slime has gone.

Does anyone know how I can get them as clean as new?

Virkon is a very good disinfectant but wont necessarily shift the glued on sticky slime....a very expensive way to clean a bucket!!

You can buy little satchets which are very inexpensive. I do all my buckets once a year in them - 1 satchet does several buckets. They all come up like new. Granted a bit of elbow greece may be needed on a gunky green one though

soak them in bleach? Just make sure you rinse them very very well afterwards.

Or you could try bicarbonate of soda, add some lemon juice (or vinegar)to it so it goes like a paste, scrub it in well leave it for a few hours then scrub it off.

Milton sterilising tablets used on babies bottles. Avaliable cheaply from the supermarket or the chemists and you can guaruntee that it won't leave an aftertaste which could put your horse off like a disinfectant might

I use boiling water, washing up liquid and a scrubbing brush (the ones with the long handles so you don't have to put your hands in the hot water) And then scrub, gets most things of the horses bowls, including dried sugar beet residue stuff.
