I took my 5 yo horse cross country schooling last night for the first time since I got him over 3 months ago. He's very green so I just trotted him over the 2 foot jumps which he did with ease and seemed to be enjoying himself. I was absolutely thrilled with him but then after we had been there for about 20 minutes he put in a massive buck after a jump which I wasn't expecting as he had been fairly calm over the previous jumps. I tried him over another and he did the same so I called it a day. Do you think it was over exhuberance as he was enjoying it so much and is he likely to continue doing this? I'm now a bit worried about jumping him as I don't want to come off!

My first thoughts would be, get his back checked, and get him checked for soundness. I'm erring towards back though. If, as you said, all was good and he was quiet and it came out of the blue that's where I would think to start, but any which way, check his back, your tack, his soundness, etc. etc. and personally I wouldn't do any more until those possibilities have been ruled out.

Thanks. He was vetted when I got him but that was 3 months ago, I've had his saddle checked and I managed to get the dentist to him today but I haven't had his back checked yet. I'll sort this out asap. You never stop putting your hands in your pocket when you have horses but I know they're worth it!
