Hi all,
Just wanted to see your opinions really.....
My new horse is only 4 (well 5 in June but was only started in June 2006) and I have never known a horse to bronc/squeal/prat about so much! When he is not prating about he can work very nicely.....but it's a bit off putting to say the least!
It doesn't bother me all the time it's not dangerous but it's a bit annoying as it breaks the good work up!
The girl who rode him between June-Dec although a good rider, was quite scared of him and his size (17.2) and lacked experience with young horses. She struggled to get him moving forwards and if she put her leg on, he squealed or 'put his back up' (threatened to buck or bronc). Since he has been with me we have had 3 schooling sessions in 3 weeks and also a change of saddle (other one was too tight on withers) and there is a big improvement in that he is striding out and using himself much more. Only thing is this squealing and bronc thing is still happening, I have never known a horse to react in this way to being told what to do, I just ignore him and keep my leg there and 9 times out of 10 it's an 'empty threat' and he carries on with his work. He does improve during the session and a lot of it seems to be pure excitment / greeness.
Has anyone else experienced this? Rarely does really buck with me on him but he has once or twice done a few handstands when asked to canter, which he finds hard as he's quite unbalanced still.
I used to have his full brother and he was the same, always bucked. I'm having his back and teeth checked later this month, but are some horses just like this?!
