Hi all,

Just wanted to see your opinions really.....

My new horse is only 4 (well 5 in June but was only started in June 2006) and I have never known a horse to bronc/squeal/prat about so much! When he is not prating about he can work very nicely.....but it's a bit off putting to say the least!

It doesn't bother me all the time it's not dangerous but it's a bit annoying as it breaks the good work up!

The girl who rode him between June-Dec although a good rider, was quite scared of him and his size (17.2) and lacked experience with young horses. She struggled to get him moving forwards and if she put her leg on, he squealed or 'put his back up' (threatened to buck or bronc). Since he has been with me we have had 3 schooling sessions in 3 weeks and also a change of saddle (other one was too tight on withers) and there is a big improvement in that he is striding out and using himself much more. Only thing is this squealing and bronc thing is still happening, I have never known a horse to react in this way to being told what to do, I just ignore him and keep my leg there and 9 times out of 10 it's an 'empty threat' and he carries on with his work. He does improve during the session and a lot of it seems to be pure excitment / greeness.

Has anyone else experienced this? Rarely does really buck with me on him but he has once or twice done a few handstands when asked to canter, which he finds hard as he's quite unbalanced still.

I used to have his full brother and he was the same, always bucked. I'm having his back and teeth checked later this month, but are some horses just like this?!

the mare i had used to do this, she improved as she did more work, but if she ever had any time off she would start all over again, was very funny and a little annoying, as hes only four i would see if he grows out of it, and just dont let him get away with it if possible

My little madam squeals and bucks, mainly just when lunging but has been known to throw the odd moves in while schooling - she squeals when we go Sjing aswell, everyone always laughs lol.

Apparently she's done ever since she was young, everythings always checked just incase but just seems to be one of her little habits

We often end up in hysterics, but I can't imagine a dressage judge thinking it is so funny!!

If I ignore him and just keep riding him forwards he seems to forget about it as soon as he remembers it, but it's still annoying!!

I'll be praying he grows out of it!

Pickle Squeals and bucks when lunging, and when hacking and if he fancies it (sounds hilarious ots really high pitched coming from this HUGE horse) he mainly just does it on the lunge and only does it when he is on the lunge with no saddle on!

I dont think he will ever stop doing it but at least he keeps it mainly to the lunge now!

So I might be stuck with it - damn and blast!!!

I get that! but people tend to look around for some 11hh mare first

fingers crossed he does, mine was the funniest out jumping, in the warmup she would squel after a fence, and shake her head around, ocassionally throwing in the odd buck just for fun, and she could buck for england! she stopped that after about 4 competitions, but still did it on the lunge

WINSTON!
Ever since Ive had him. Mainly when hes jumping and not always.
Mind you at this time of year its a very common occurance, whereas in the warmer weather its rare.

Its high spirits and fun. Just make sure tho that you continue to work him through it. It is funny etc, but if he gets into a habit of it it could one day catch you out.

I used to have a mare who would squeal if we caught particularaly "big air" over a fence. Oxers pretty much guaranteed it, used to get lots of funny looks and it always meant hang on tight 'cos were gonna buck on landing.

Hi V, Yes I'm hoping he'll grow out of it once he's seen a bit more of the world. I defo don't want to be known as 'the girl with the squeaking horse' on the circuit!!

I do push him on when he's doing it and tell him to shut it, but I wonder one day whether he'll just think 'oh naff off' and fire me off, he turns himself inside out in the field so I know he has it in him....

I think that is just they way some of them are, my lad bucks fairly regularly either in protest to what he is being asked to do or in excitement (they are the really big ones!!) when he squeaks as well!

He also bucks when he canters across the field as he is now 13 and has done this since i bought him (6 years ago) and is generally a fit well and happy lad i think it is just him!

Winston is 12 this time and hes still happy to do it lol
This time of year, he knows it hunting/eventing hes also very fit and isnt carrying much weight. Hes a big lad when he gets going, and buggered my knee last year through his stupidness

He also managed to get me off a couple of weeks ago, first time ever!

Yes again, winston bucks in the field violently, even in the stable too! and has already had two panels out this winter

You do have to just keep his head up and keep sending him forward. its nice that they have so much enthusiuam for work, but not if its gonna cost you a class or you coming off.

Vxx

My TB does it if he doesn't like what he's being asked to do....he'll concerteen up and arch his neck as if he's going to have a bucking fit. I just kick him on and he's ok.

Unfortunately he's reverted back to this after having time off work - the more work he gets the better he is though definately.

Even if you can't ride, stick her on the lunge for 15 mins - some horses just can't have days off!

Dotty (avatar) always does it when playing in the field, bucking and squealing as she goes; I wouldn't be at all surprised if she carries on when broken! Hopefully, it won't be me that has to deal with it cos she can buck for England with her powerful backside!

Louis used to hunch up and buck or bronc when he was young. I was always taught, as you are doing, just to keep my leg on and ignore it. After about a year of regular work and strengthening up he completely stopped doing it and hasn't really behaved like that since. Now the most extreme reaction I get if I ask something he doesn't like is a little buck or in extreme cases (v rarely) he will try and stop and go backwards. However if he does any of this I put my leg or strongly or my stick and make him move fowards.

Hes only young, I sure he'll get better as he gets older!!! My 4yo is nutty on a lunge, to the extent that you think OMG I cant believe I ride that!!! But touchwood he is 100% great to ride!!!

my mare used to squeal and 'stamp' a front leg when asked to work forwards into a contact.

i just kept the leg on and kept asking and (eventually) she grew out of it!

although even now she will stamp if asked something difficult!

My horse used to do this. he'd squeal like a pig before bucking like a crazy thing (usually out hacking!!). he'd knocked the confidence out of his last owner & just got in a bad habit of being naughty & bucking.

I tried everything to break the habit - and nothing really worked!! (he was already middle aged & set in his ways!!!) Eventually i found the only thing that worked was using a 3 ring gag bit (on 2nd hole) as it gave me a bit more control when i needed it & helped me prevent him from getting his head down & learning to get him going forward when he was going to buck.

On really bad days when he was hell bent on being a rodeo pony my last resport was spinning him in a tight circle. It felt like he had a huge build up of energy & that was the safest way of getting it out of him - as if he didn't go round in a circle he was sure to go up in the air!!!

Hopefully if your horse is younger she;ll be easier to get out of the habit. Good Luck

Bert squeals and bucks when excited.....mailnly cantering and only occasionaly when ridden although always in the field.

Also stamps feet and squeals if asked to stand still for too long.

Luckily has never done anything more than tht nd certainly never bronced as I would end up on the floor!
