i have a quarter horse who's just turned 4. bought him last september as backed!!! what a joke! my trainer has tried riding him and has a problem with him bucking. he won't attempt it now and i am doing everything myself. my problem is i don't think he will buck with me but he is at a western training yard but i think maybe the english way of training would suit him better, at loggerheads with the trainer and also at my wits end doing this alone. any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated
 
Erm.Right.Ok.

Backed could mean a lot of things in different people's eyes.

Did you see him ridden and ride him yourself?
 
Once all the usual checks have been done, it might be wise to start right from the beginning again and re back him?
Being backed doesn’t always mean rideable, some people think ‘being backed’ is sitting on them once.
 
The horses back needs checking too , then if after all checkings clear maybe rebacking from the start to make sure backed and brought on properly , some people just sit on a horse and nothing else

Personally I'd be inclined to turn him away for a bit and then re-start him. It sounds like he's a bit confused, at the mo he's at a western yard, but you're wanting him to do English? This is a lot to take on for a young horse and he's probably getting confusing messages.

Also, as has been said, there are obvious issues re. saddling, bitting, teeth etc. Some of the western bits I've seen have been absolutely horrendous things and maybe he's had some bad experience.

He sounds like a really honest horse, but I thinnk he needs a bit of time; then a re-start perhaps, and I reckon he'll turn out a good'un for you.
 
After he was backed (presumably as 3.5 yo last summer if backed by September), how much was he ridden? What kind of work have you done with him? When did the bucking occur? Has he been turned away since and if so, how did you restart him?
 
he's learning western, just that i thought the english way of starting might suit him better. my trainer has finally agreed. all the usual checks have been done and we have started back at the very beggining. it is a bit sad when people are'nt truthful about what a horse has done. as far as we know he was started by one trainer and he continually bucked them off, he was sold on to anothefr trainer who we discovered just put a saddle on him and then could'nt be bothered to do any more and turned him away with another youngster until i bought him. he just seems to get very confused and his only answer is to then buck you off! i'm doing loads of ground work with him and he seems to be getting the idea, i think it's going to be baby steps but i just get really disheartened, he really is a lovely chap
 
I would be inclined to ask the vet for the person they reccomend for backs.
More often than not, they can find the root cause of a back problem, as they see backs day in and day out. If the physio can find nothing wrong, then it does sound like he is highly confused.
If you look up in the search function here for posts by Janet George, and Lloyd, Janet explains quite well why things can go so badly wrong. Lloyd was thought to be unbackable, but with the right trainer he has come on minus the leaps and bounds!
