Okay, you all know hunni the bucking mare XP well she has started again,we had her tack checked it's not that, had vet out and he said she has a bit of a soft back and an enlarged follicle on her ovary, and we had marble fitted, then she was sound for a few days, then today it happend again... I just want the horse back that I learnt to canter on,jump on and gallop :/ last year and winter just gone she has been a total sweethart, I could do ANYTHING with her </3 it just hurts me to see her like this, do you think it is her feed? Is there any good/cheap calming feeds out there ?
 
There's a big difference between a D ring snaffle and a gag... If there's no reason not to then I'd go back to bit she was happier in,
Re feed... make sure you are feeding vitamins and minerals if not feeding the recommended amount of the feed you use, Many places do a low energy cube cheaper than any of the brands. Cheap chaff tends to have high molasses content so could be false economy. If you need to add contion then you can buy unmolassed sugar beet cubes much cheaper than the quick soak stuff & oil is good for condition without excitability
Have you had teeth done regularly? If mouth is painful then she won't be chewing/digesting feed properly and wearing bit/noseband could be increasing pain

I am thinking teeth. I known mares to go through a point where it's painful to ride, due to there ovary's being enlarged. They have tended to sort themselves out.
Has her teeth been checked, and are you are gentle rider? Reason for asking is that an Arab mare I used to ride, when she was in season or near enough if you rode her any less gentler than a fly landing on you she went berserk. Everything had to be ever so slight.
I would maybe go back to the D-ring. The gag won't help with bucking at-all, they tend to encourage a lot of horses to lean which won't be helping one bit. See how she goes in the D-ring, or just a plain snaffle.


To be honest- keep in mind we have spring grass at the minute! :rolleyes:
I think everyones horses are being slightly outrageous at the minute!
To be honest if she's a good doer i wouldn't bother with feed. None of ours are fed at the minute and if mine is getting a treat he gets literally, a handful on soaked bran (20kg bag is £6 here and bran contains nothing at all really, does not go to the head etc) To keep the vits and mins up I feed a spoonful of garlic and a half a handful of suregrow.
Mines is a fabulous doer, doesn't need any condition and also suspect able to laminatis.

What are you feeding her? Sugarbeet has an awful effect on my boy- turns him from a dopey buckle ride to the "Grip with your knees and you might come out alive sort!"
I'd personally stay away from all calmers at the minute especically molichaff calmer etc, I feel they do more harm than good. Alot of pony nuts now a days are a mixture of oats,barley, bran, molasses and sugar. Hence the reason my boy doesn't get this.
If you were going for a calmer I'd get a supplement rather than a feed.
I have heard good about NAF magic (possibly someone could back me up here?) have not used it personally.

Just keep going and trying different things, it's all you can do.

Have you got a good physio or chiro locally? Vets are obviously brilliant but not all of them are good with picking up on all back pain.

She might have pain in her poll for example, any pain can cause bucking so I think what everone has said so far is very valid. Check teeth, bit etc too.

Good luck, its not easy, if only they could talk!
