Hi decided as new boy was being so chilled i would take him in school to lunge ect as soon as he saw the school he tensed up i let him walk around the school and get used to it as i have no history and he hasnt been ridden for 6 yrs i lunged him but he kept sticking me and didnt want to go out so i got 2 good circles from him and decided to get on i put one foot in the stirrup and he went bucking mad i hit the floor! so i thought i would get some one to lead him while i leaned over him again bucking fit and rearing he then settled so i gave him a break took him out the school he let me sit on him so walked him back in to the school as touched the school he went bucking rearing mad and i hit the floor again, my instructor was with me and she couldnt get him to settle we left the school again sat on him 4 bucks and he was fine a real plod! what else can i try? my instructor says keep at it but he gets so stressed feeling very sore after it all lol i had his back feet ect checked last week

it was given to me after he was left at a livery yard the owners took over the yard and he was left behind with his passport cant track old owners i no hes been miss treated in the past as there was a note in his pasport if u turn him out in the school he chews the rails and sweats up the school owner wont be happy if he chews the place!

If he is perfectly fine to hack, then it seems like a psychological problem with the school as such. I would try to re-associate the school with positive things. Try rewarding him for just going in the school, go in little and often reward and leave, then try the same thing with tack on, then try it getting on him again, but I would give him a good month or so if simply going in there and getting rewarded without anything more stressful and I would try going in again only after a nice long hack.

Good luck!

It would certainly seem that he is pretty terrified of the school for some reason, if he can't even bear to be turned out in it. Poor horse I wonder what happened to him.

i don't imagine many people will agree with me, but if he were mine I would probably accept that he doesn't go in there and would school in a field or out hacking. I just can't imagine that he will ever feel happy and relaxed enough to learn anything in the school.

My old mare was thoroughly sickened of the school by a previous owner and makes it very clear that she is not going to cooperate at all if you even lead her in. On the other hand she is beautifully schooled and you only have to 'think' halt or canter or whatever and she does it. But I just accept that the school is a no for her. As I said I doubt many people will agree with me!

i was thinking of just using him for the odd walk out he cant control him self in trot and he cant canter but hes happy walking as long as i dont push him on i didnt wanted to get slated for saying may be i should just put my hands up and let him have his own way, he was ment to be pts so what ever he does is a bouns!

I think he is a VERY lucky horse to have found such a wonderful owner! Goodness knows what's been done to him to get him in this state. I didn't realise he had such problems trotting and cantering. He may just surprise you once he learns to trust you. Good luck with him.
