Hey, i have recentley bought a 5 year old 15.1hh Irish Cob Cross gelding, i am 15 and although i have had horses on loan and have been riding since i was 5, he is my first horse. He is an amazing jumping horse and i hope to go hunting with him in the winter months but he has a problem with bucking...
When schooling, he doesnt buck in the canter at all and is always very well behaved but if ever i canter him in a field or gallops, he always does these massive bucks which can be very hard to sit to, he doesnt seem to be scared or in pain, just very excitable... I have fallen and broken my arm because of this and am really hoping that someone might have a similar experience and could give me some advice?
He has a normal strength bit but i also have a Pellam which i could use if this would do any good? Im new to keeping a horse and was wondering if there was any way i could train him out of this behavior?
thankyou :)

Hi!

It sounds like your horse needs to go back to the basics and learn some manners. Get yourself an instructor you trust and work together. And don't go cantering in fields - from his previous form, he is obviously going to misbehave so call his bluff. Walk round, or think I will do walk trot walk transitions. If he is used to cantering in a particular place, it may be that you have to cut that canter out completely for the forseeable future. And if he is really difficult in a certain field, don't take him in there. Discipline, patience and consistency I'm afraid! But it will make him a far nicer boy and you don't want any more injuries xx

Thanks for your reply :)
If i just walk him through the field he is absaloutley fine :/
Its just when i take him into the canter that he starts being naughty, and he doesnt bolt which is odd...
thanks x
