... how can you train a horse not to buck? do you ignore it or punish them which then results in more bucks?

You get everything checked first. Back, saddle, teeth.

Then it's hands up and push them forward.

Is this for the same horse though that your vet wants to come and look at because it's bucking when mounted?

Ignore it and carry on, they will learn it doesnt get them anywhere, unless there huge powerful ones that get you off, in which case, dust yourself down and get back on again.

Finding out why the horse is bucking is first port of call, pain related? or just pure excitement/energy? or the horse a thinker... throwing a tantrum because the horse is not getting its own way thus knowing he can ditch his rider, last one being the worst to deal with!

Are they bucks during canter/jumping or are they dirty bucks? as in stopping, napping and then throwing the bucks in?...again those buggars are the worst!

Keeping the head up at all times, pushing forward and changing direction, when you feel the back tensing (usually they do this when there thinking about it)so your trying to change the horses train of thought.

Second that one.....my horse takes great pleasure in doing this.....and if he doesnt get me off.....its the mini rears and running full pelt backwards!!
Gotta love 'em! :D

it is when asking for canter.

Well it could be just excitement but to be on the safe side I'd look more into it, does the horse only do this when being ridden or does he/she does this when asked to canter on the lunge?

Does your horse disunite in canter ever? or perhaps less balanced or stiff on one rein than the other?

Does your horse have difficutly in his/her straightness during schooling?

Maybe your horse finds it more difficult to bring his hind legs under himself to propell him into the canter, therefore finding discomfort when asking for a canter transition.

Does your horse only do this on a circle (schooling) or out on hacks as well?

he only does it when schooling, he only does it when asking for canter from a trot, doesnt do it from walk to canter. He is well schooled and not a youngster. He only does it sometimes though, not every schooling session - he will not do it if you lunge him first.

Might be that something is hurting him doing trot to canter - he is probably working differently in the school to out and about so that might explain the difference in behaviour.

Or he might just be finding it all really exciting!

Silly question, but he is really well warmed up before you have your first canter, I suppose?

Get everything checked out, then if not I would get an instructor to come and watch you ride or even get someone to film you - it might even be something that you are doing unconsciously.

Then take it from there:)

My welshie bucks going into canter if I hold the outside rein too much. It's because he can't swing his back end through enough so he releases it by bucking.

But he also used to buck because he was an oik. It used to be so high his tail flicked me in the face. I just bought a suade saddle saver and ignored them. He got board with it after about 6 months!
