Just to be awkward, he does have a bit of a dorsal stripe on his bottom, but it stops at his loins!

I'm still confused.... if the word Appaloosa refers to a breed not a colour, how come "spotty" horses/ponies come in all shapes and sizes from miniature horses to 16.2s etc? I don't know of any other breeds which can

Because many spotty horses are not appys. Piebald horses come in all shapes and sizes, but every piebald is not automatically a gypsy cob.
