I have a new camera and have been busy experimenting with it whenever I get the opportunity - Here are a couple of pictures of the buckskin lad from Sunday. He's nearly three months old now, and is PBA x Trakehner (Roundhills Blue Moon x Godington Hannibal x Elite Gribaldi).

Thank you everyone, I think he is a cracking foal as well and am really pleased with him. If only he were a filly!

Mind you with that breeding could be quite hot, still I like them liek that so I still want.

I know why you say that, but honestly, I really don't think he is going to be hotter than normal! I own his mother who is a love, ditto his maternal grandmother. I also owned the full sister to his father, and she was a complete babe. I have worked closely with his maternal grandfather who has a super temperament, and I have met his paternal grandparents, both of whom seemed very chilled and "nice people". On top of that, I personally know his maternal great-grandmother and she is a nice horse who throws a good temperament.

Phew. Nothing like keeping it all in the family, but at least I know the entire background to his breeding!

Hi Cruiseline - His father has 32.25% arabian blood, so this chap is 16.125%. His mother is a purebred Trakehner who probably has a certain percentage of Arab blood herself, but she's not registered as such.

As for height - I would put 15.2 forward as my estimate. Both parents are 158cm, although the grandparents are a touch bigger. He is currently standing at 48" (12hh) at just under three months old. He is his mother's first foal, but she is doing him well and he is well grown now.

He's absolutely stunning! Lovely breeding too, i have an arab x trakehner and it seems to be a lovely mix.

Please don't tell me he's for sale?!!

Phew! He'll be too small for me which is a relief since he's gorgeous!!

And I really don't NEED another horse (trying to convince myself I think!!

He is simply stunniung, what a lovely kind face, presumably he will have black legs etc once his foal coat comes out? I know nothing about buckskins as you will gather.

Very eyecatching indeed. Good job he is a colt as I also only do fillies.

I suppose that he would be able to do part Arab classes as a youngster, as well as Sport Horse ones?

Yes, spot on. He will be eligible for all PBA classes as well as generic sportshorse classes - and at the moment he'd not look out of place in either, or even in a Hunter or RH youngstock class, although of course I guess his beautiful colouring would not be the norm for those classes!

His legs will be black when his foal coat has finished shedding out - up to the knees and hocks. He's also got black tips to his ears and a black snout (I love using that word, I know it's not technically the correct terminology!).

Actually if he'd make a Small Hunter I think his colour would be entirely in his favour.

My first pony was a 'dun' like a deep gold coin with those black legs and stood out in a crowd.

Snout! I like that!

Really super colt - I like him a lot, and he will be even more stunning when he sheds his foal-coat!

Zoeshiloh's PBA filly-foal (50% Arab) has been winning both sport horse and hunter classes, so no reason why this lovely boy shouldn't do well - any plans to show him?

I am sure he will do well showing - we have one "function" we are attending in a couple of week's time and another one booked in for Sept just before weaning.

He's had the proper care and training, so will be an easy job for someone to bring out next year as well - his aunt (full sister to the sire) that I owned never went through the gawky yearling phase - she was always just ready to step into the show ring. I am sure this lad will be the same.

WOW!! He certainly fills the eye, even at such a young age! You must be absolutely delighted to have bred such a treasure.

Apologies in advance for a very ignorant question!.....

Whats the difference between a Buckskin and a Dun?

(I thought Buckskin was an American term)

No apology required - it's something some people get irate about, but I'm a sea of calm and Zen-esque vibes.

Dun and buckskin are similar colours, but are caused by completely different genes. Golden Dun is created when there is a copy of the Dun gene on a bay base coat - that would look like this foal, but there would also be a dorsal stripe and perhaps "barring" on the legs and other "primative" markings. Duns also come in chestnut, black etc - all with the other associated markings.

Buckskin is simply a bay horse with the addition of a Cream gene. This gene also makes chestnut horses palomino, and when you've got two copies it's the one which gives you cremello or perlino on chestnut and bay respectively.

A Dun horse with two copies of the gene (homozygous for Dun) will not look any different to one with a single copy (heterozygous), but the "double dilutes" with regards to the Cream gene are very different to the single dilutes.

I hope that helps - I personally think the term "Buckskin" sounds very Americanised as well - and much prefer the word Dun!

Thank you Ashbank - what a fountain of knowledge you are and only just proves that you learn something new everyday.

However, even with all that scientific information, if I saw the foal tomorrow I would think it looked dun!!

And by the way, I absolutely love duns - and this foal is gorgeous!

Stunning boy. I am soooo jealous. Just LOVE that colouring. Must try for one myself year after next
