Hi everyone, well its 4 weeks today since the 'event' and operation to flush buddy's hock joint and remove bone chips. He has had an xray today at the vets following 4 weeks of box rest and in hand exercise.
The xrays show some fine cracks over the whole bone (vet compared it too the glaze on a bone china mug), this is from the force of impact but shouldn't effect his performance at all but will mean it may over calcify which will leave him a with a big hock always. So maybe no hoys for us but no reason he can't be a fully functioning all rounder as long as hard concussive work is avoided.
He advocated keeping him barefoot at very least behind to lesson any jarring to the joint from wearing shoes (ffion, oberon and co. will like this
)
There is a slim chance the bone will reject any looser cracks/bone chips, worst case scenario he will have to be re opened to get these out, but hopefully the scar tissue will bind the whole thing tight enough to avoid this!! Long as I get my boy back I don't mind a lumpy hock
Obviously arthritic changes are a massive concern. We're are looking at possibly annual xrays for the the foreseeable to keep a record...
But he is sound!!!!!!!! In trot on hard ground. He is allowed out as long as he is sensible, I have an individual pen arranged for him plus sedalin first few days.
I can also start riding him again, 20 mins in walk for 2 weeks then build to half an hours walk up to 6 weeks when vet will re access before we start trot work.
Phew. Obligatory sleepy after xray pic
Thank you for all the vibes and support. You are all fantastic!!!!
