I am trying to get to grips with the horse market and struggling as it seems to vary so hugely.

What would be the minimum you'd expect to pay for a SOUND mare or gelding, 6-11 years, experience jumping BS 1m or even 110, good to hack etc, amateur friendly? e.g nothing too quirky, nothing that stops etc.

I have a budget in mind but I am starting to think it's not enough!

£20k! I’m viewing allrounder cobs for £15k (well trying - it’s a sellers market so you need to be quick!) so something more competitive would be higher I would imagine.

I would expect £15k plus if the BS record was decent

That was my initial thought too. If you're willing to take on something with a quirk/ compromise you might get it for less but for something that will jump 1.10 and is amateur friendly and easy to do in that age range, I think you'll be paying a fair amount for it with 15k as the starting point!

Even within your description there is a wide range both of age and experience. Experience jumping 100/110 might be a horse who has done that and made it around the course a couple of times, or one that is established and to some extent successful. And an 11 year old that has just about competed at this level that is very different to a 6 year old that is already doing well and has much potential.

I’m not an expert on BS but I would think you might find the 11 year old for £12k but the 6 year old would be £20k+.

I think if you want to jump 1m and want a horse that doesn't mind a miss, and jumps clean, it's £12-15k.

I think there is a big step up in a horse who will take you around 1.10m, or 1.15 in the JO, and still take a miss, not stop, not be quirky and be careful too.
Those horses are £20k min I think and would be in high demand for pony riders moving onto horses.

Thank you everyone, seems there is a lot of variation.

To be honest I'm looking for something to be competitive at 110, which makes me think I need to be nearer the £15-20k mark.

you’ll need nearer 20k for that type. Lower with a quirk/doesn’t hack type but for amateur friendly allrounder that can also be competitive at 1.10, you’ll need top End
