i have worked out that on my wage, plus a bit of help from parents

that i can afford it unless i have a really expensive livery yard, which i dont want

i also already have money saved up in case of big vet bills (:

I dont want to sound harsh, but i think you'll struggle to find a yard that does cheap enough livery. As MACCIMOO said before, there is no budget when it comes to horses. Please think carefully before getting one. I am sure you would only want the best for your horse, and unfortunately, the best comes at a price.

I have to say, in a cheap area my horses cost £22 per week, each on livery. Thats a very cheap yard in the area. Plus add hayledge, hard feed, farrier, routine vet, non routine vet (mine have just cost me over £500 in non routine stuff), insurance, and I could go on forever.

OH budgets around £400 per month for his horse into a seperate account to pay for stuff. He doesn't compete either.

If you are determined however, look into bulk buying bedding and forage in, its often cheaper.

have you considered sharing? it would probably be better for you give your budget,

my horses cost me £25 a week each livery, then i have to add shavings (£6.50 a bale) hay (£2.50) a bale then feed. insurance for me is a must a unless you've save £1000 you might not really have enough to cover non routines. without my horses lameness problems i have spent about £1000 this year on vets bills and with out insurance i would have been completely broke.

other things you need to consider is feed buckets, rugs (if the horse trashes one you would be expect to replace this) haynets and all the silly little things that all add up.

Well I was paying £13 a week at a lovely yard until recently, so they are out there.

However, my budget can and has stretched to more. If yours can't then I would be wary of taking on such a big committment if you don't have your parent's full backing. Big bills happen with horses (and your savings will not always cover them).

You cannot totally budget as you never know what may happen to your horse. As for cheap livery, just to give you an idea my yearling pony is on DIY grass livery (the cheapest type of livery) and that is £70 a month so thats £17.50 a week just for his livery. There is also his feed, insurance, feet trimming every 6 - 8 weeks and wormers to pay for, and he's just a baby. Just think very very carefully before rushing into anything and make sure your parents are fully aware of the costs and you have their full support.

I think you will struggle to find a livery yard that cheap. Dont forget that the cheapest is not always best. Where you keep your horse is really important for both your happiness and welfare.

I have been at a few places for 10 pounds a week but they weren't right for me. I have been at a lot of places and the only advice I can give you is to ask lots of questions about the place and really get a feel for it and the other people there.

thanks becca114
what you all dont realise is that i have found cheap livery yards around me, i was just asking if anyone knew of any others.. my actual question on this post is can you recommend any cheapish hay, bedding, feed merchants as prices are so high at the moment!!

thanks xx

A bit tothe south of you but locally, pirces are
Shavings £7.50, I expect them to be £8 by end of year
Hay, good hay about £3 a bale, we have one who get through 4 bales a week, one only needs two, likewise, feed will depend on what your horse needs. Most mixes about £8-9 a bag
I epect shoing to rise again soon, increase in prices of steel, fuel etc. so £65 a set .
