Anyone got any good recipes for fly repellent that do not contain citronella and would not make horse smell like he's been sitting marinating in garlic? Feeding garlic is one thing, coating horse and inevitably rider in it is, well, quite another!!
I like having friends!!

I use Olbas Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Lavender, Lemon Grass and Citronella Oil but to be honest its the Olbas Oil that works the best. I just put the other stuff in to make it smell better nicer!!!

Ah perfect. Cheers. It's for a big Warmblood who i'm sharing. I've discovered that when you try to put bug spray on him, he grows a good meter and glares at you at if you're trying to poison him. He is fine with m and t conditioner though, so think he must hate the smell of citronella! I shall try Olbas Oil - the containers are tiny too so i can subtly appy it!

Do you dilute it in vinager/tea? These have been suggested.

i dont think you can have a nicer smelling horse that is fly free im afraid! the nice ones just dont work

Suppose it depends on what one constitutes as nice. After all, flies like the smell of sh!t...

I've heard a lot of good things about the use of essential oils, i guess some are nasty and some nice. Will have to see. Cheers though
