We are going to put in a planning application for stables and I wondered if anyone had any advice. We are trying to decide what type of building to apply for. We need two looseboxes , a tack room and a store. Would people recommend going for stone built or wooden? Budget is generous. Alos if anyone has any stable manufacturer recommendations that would be great. We are based in the south west. Thankyou

We built stables a long time ago .Because we are a stone cottage with clay tile hang up stairs the planners insisted that the stable were built in brick and specified the colour of the bricks and of the roofing material. It wasn't cheap! but it was the only way to get it through the planners.
27 years later I am delighted that we were forced to build this way.Maintenance is minimal the hard wood doors are painted with stain every spring and some pointing is needed every 10 years or so.The stables are beautifully cool in summer and snug and warm in winter.
I am so glad we went for brick build and not wood!!

Thankyou ,thats very helpful. I think the planners will be very demanding if they even let us build (more than likely think we will be turned down.) Still its worth a try and our house desperately needs some outbuildings so we can but try.

Just want to say it might be an idea to arrange a meeting with the planners to discuss it before submitting to see if you can get an idea of what they are likely to pass then get the plans drawn up professionally its worth doing it to get really nice representation of what they will look like .We used an agent who did the negociating for us (it stops it feeling personal) .
Also don't give up too easily try to get support from anyone who it will effect. We have just built a riding arena (again using an agent ) it took 4 applications and an appeal but by negociating we got it in the end it took two and a half years but now it is built it was well worth it.

Thanks for the advice. We had already decided to use a planning consultant to prepare our application for us. Glad your arena is working out.
