Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had any tips on building up the top line on an older horse. He's a 23 year old Andalusian x Connemara and does struggle with his weight so have to find a balance between exercising and weight maintaining. I understand it's unlikely for him to have a 'perfect' looking top line however I would like him to build it up a little more. He still gets feed nearly every day just to help him put on a few extra pounds. I currently cannot ride him as much as I would like due to exams however these finish in 3 weeks so want to know what I can do to help this oldie to looking fab for his age (although he does not act it). Thanks in advance, all advice welcome!

raised walk poles - build up amount of poles slowly.
carrot stretches
shoulder fore/ in
backward steps
a few little good exercises for you. alfa oil really helped my horse put on weight

There's a brilliant book / dvd combo called activate your horse's core

Having great results with this currently, helping with core work, stretching and topline and the horse seems to be really enjoying it

I had this issue but with a much younger horse. Couldn't get him to keep any weight on or build muscle. I fed him on Balanced Horse feeds show mix which worked absolute wonders with his weight gain. He was fed Baileys No 4 Topline cubes along side this. Ive heard soya oil can be good but can't quote it.
But what i would use every time over is Equitop Myoplast. It is around £63 a tub on ****** and it lasted me around a month on a 17.2 horse and now my 6 year old is fed it too just as a helping hand to get him stronger. Hope this helps!

The active ingredient in Myoplast is spirulina, which you may find cheaper. Apparently some horses won't eat it but other people report that their normally picky eaters are fine with it. Myoplast is a lot of money for a lot of sugar if your horse will eat spirulina instead.
