Hello :)

I have a 13 year old ex racehorse that was diagnosed with kissing spine and hock spavins last year. She had 8 months 'off' in that she was rehabbed as per vet instructions with regular checks. She had acupuncture, laser treatment and a new saddle as well as a prolite to wear under her saddle whilst her muscles develop again.

She was treated with the injections (back and hocks) and was given the OK to come back into competition work in December/January. Since then she has stayed sound, competed in dressage and showjumping, been to RC camp and is now starting to event.

However - I can't seem to get and keep her topline. She built up again on her neck and quarters, but then seemed to start losing it again and I have made no progress on her back it seems. She is worked 6 times a week including lunged in a pessoa as per vet instructions once or twice a week. She does hill work at least once a week, pole work, jumping and flatwork. She likes to go like a giraffe, so I have to insist she goes forward into a contact and stays round but it can be a struggle.

She is fed on conditioning cubes (Baileys No 4 or Dodson & Horrell Build up), Dengie alfa a and corn oil. She is turned out 24/7.

Does anyone have any exercises or suggestions for helping to build topline please? I just want to make sure she stays strong through her abs and back so that she keeps the KS at bay and stays comfortable.

Thank you!

Looking at her picture I think it's her core that you need to be building up, and then the top line will follow. So lots of gymnastic exercises - transitions (tons of them, particularly in and out of canter), bits of lateral work, raised poles.

I would also be tempted to swap out the Pessoa in favour of side reins when lunging (understand if you're uncomfortable with that given that it's vets advice), just because it may help improve the forward into contact issues

Thank you! I have side reins so can do more of that. Will help me with my Stage 3 exam practice, too!

Can you recommend anywhere online or books etc that have lots of gymnastic exercises at all? I have a lesson with a BD coach next week and I have said to her that building her strength and producing her correctly is my main aim so I am hoping she will be able to help me, but having more pole based ideas would be great as I try to do a different pole exercise each week.
