Has anyone got any tips for building topline on a horse that has been out of work?

My horse has been out of work and on field rest for 3 months after a very severe bruise to his foot which has left him with 2 'pockets' of air near some sensitive tissue.

Both vet and farrier said he is fine to ride at walk on a hard surface - so only hacking. (If he goes on uneven ground the pockets of air push into the tissue and make him footy)

We don't have any hills around us which makes it hard!

I've been working L&L and then in an outline with some gentle lateral movements.

Any ideas would be great :)

P.S, He's 21 which explains his slightly dipped back - He is also not bum high like top picture depicts

The first thing I would do is put his feed bucket on the floor and if you use haynets - stop and put his hay in a haybar, or on the floor. As for riding, pole work will help, if you have no hills.

I feed him from a hanging bucket as it's the only way he eats all his dinner. If I feed him from the floor he throws his feed everywhere then doesn't clear it up. He has a hay bar and is out in the field day/night at the moment.

Short bursts of work with the horse using itself correctly will help. I have no real hills near me but long rein my immature 4 year old in a pessoa fitted relatively loosely just enough to encourage him to use himself a little more effectively. (I do this on the roads after lessons and practice in a safe place) Slightly raised poles will help if you have somewhere flat enough to place some
