Hi All,

Just looking for some advice on how to build up pone's muscles on his right side. I've had the chiro and saddler out in the last week and have stretches from chiro. Saddler said he is less developed on the right which is causing the saddle to slip over.

I've been working on circles, leg yield and some rather dubious shoulder-in.

Can anyone suggest anything else I should be doing?

Thanks all,

Are you doing any lunging? Lunging over poles on a circle, raised poles, changing the size of the circle a lot may help. Obviously make sure he is worked properly on both sides. Lunging with 2 lines would give you more control and you could ask for some inside bend (with the lunge line clipped to the roller and through the bit *if that makes sense*)

Are you using any gadgets? Working low and round will help build up his back. Maybe a de gouge or chambon would help. Although admittedly I don't use either.

Thanks RR. Yes, I lunge him a couple of times a week generally - sometimes use side reins but haven't for a while because of back issues, just been ticking him round.

Will try lungeing over poles (may actually have to gallop alongside him, otherwise he just goes round them, apparently they *might* be a monster!!)

Two lines might be a issue as I think he'll freak about anything touching his rear end but might give it a go.

Get a registered physio to come out and assess your horse and to show you how to use tape over affected areas (proprioreception?) to get them using that side more

I've just had a Mactimmoney Chiro out to him who has given me some stretches and exercises to do with him on the ground - just wondering what else I can do when riding to help build him up.

Have had registered physio out in the past but didn't seem to make much difference hence the switch to a Mac Chiro.

Like I say, having been using a superb physio, look into proprioreception techniques. It involves sticking tape over specific muscle groups to make the horse more aware of how it is moving the weaker limb and start to use it mre correctly

i recently had a physio out to my mare - she said her near shoulder and off side buttock were both less developed than the other diagnol pair, possibly due to an old injury. Shes given me lots of stretches to do plus a pole work exercise programme.

Go back to your Mctim lady and ask for suggestions.

I used lead boots on my horse. On his left side he had massive chunck of led which id cut into the strike pad. He wore them for everything including turnout. Only thing that worked in my opinion as it wasnt all round muscle was particularely one side

I have a relatively heavy copper 'bracelet' chain that goes around the pastern on the weak hind leg - it just makes my horse more aware of that leg and he seems to lift it higher than the other side - works for him when its on but it hasn't been long so will wait to see if when it is off whether he then continues to work that leg more. You can make your own with curb chains or those dog chains. About 4oz is the right weight for my boy (16.1)
