Quick(ish) question - how do you reintroduce trot work - how much to do per session and how fast to increase it?
Pony has been in walk work (straight line hacking) for 4 weeks following hind splint fracture surgery. She was off work for 4 months total with box rest, op (op was in late June), more box rest, small paddock turnout etc before going out normally. She has been on full turnout for 4 weeks and started walk work at the same time as per vets instructions.
Plan from vet was:
Week 1 - 15 mins walk
Week 2- increase walk by 5 mins per day until doing 1hr, keep doing 1hr until end of week 4
Week 5 - stick to 1hr but add in some trot, building trot up over 4 weeks
After 8 weeks can start to work her "normally", adding in canter, schooling, poles etc gradually.
Not sure how much trot to do though? We started on Sat and both days did 1x30 seconds (yes I timed it lol
), today I did 3x30 seconds. Is that too cautious? Too much? She's keen and feels great but I don't want to overdo it, but equally she isn't struggling at all with the walk (doesn't break sweat at all even when marching out). She did lose lots of muscle but looks much better after the 4 weeks walking, some way to go though!
She's 14.2hh Welsh D, 14 years old. Prior to the op she was in medium work weather permitting (light over winter) and she has bags of natural stamina. Sadly it is very flat where I am and we are hacking at first light Mon-Fri so limited where we can go safely. Currently going up and down a 2 mile stretch of restricted byway.
(ps I lied - that wasn't a quick q at all! Sorry)
