I am about to rescue a male Bull Dog, he is entire, one year old. His back legs are not perfect, this makes him useless to breed from. I want to have him castrated, I have heard that aenesthetic(sp) can be detremental to this breed. Can anyone advise me?

Where are you getting him from?
Why are the rescue not neutering him?

If you are worried i would find a vet that is very familiar with bull breeds.

Although i have know a lot of bulldogs who have done just fine.

Is he is an

English Bull terrier
American bull dog
British bull dog

One of the above is high risk the other 2 no where near as high but slightly higher than other breeds.

Other..............:)

He is a British Bull Dog. Is he a problem? I need to make a decision by the weekend. I would really like this dog, I dont know where he might end up if I dont take him on. I am used to expensive up keep dogs as I have Sha-pei!

Yes he is the higher risk of the bull dog breeds, I have still seen them frequently go through surgery mind you for cherry eye more commonly and castration/spay and obs C sections in bitches because its very common for them to need one, vets know to take extra care when these breeds are under and more so on recovery where they need to be closely supervised.
It would not put me off and I would still castrate.

Thank you CAYLA,I think that I shall take the risk of castration, He needs to fit in with my dogs and be settled. My vets are good, they did a gastric torsion op on my Shar- pei with success. I think that this breed will also be suseptible to gastric torsion, so I must take care!

I have a british bull dog and they're not all the freaks we imagine.

He has been under aenesthetics without problem but as Carla says I would try and find a vet used to the ' trickier' breeds.

I would deffo take the dog, mine has no problems at all with breathing, movement, cherry eye etc but he does have bad skin in the summer which is controlled with steroids.

Good luck, they are the most fabulous dogs :D
