bum high horses?

Fitting is an issue but they've never slipped thankfully although I do use a limpet pad. I'm fed up got though 2 saddles in 12 months so having a wow fitted next month!

My mare has always been croup high & until she was about 9 yrs old didn't even have 'defined' withers either so anything would always shoot up her neck, I found non elastic girths & the thorowgood saddlecloths (with the non slip on horse side) the best bet. She is now 13, still slightly bum high but I have a Nathaniel Underwood saddle which fits amazingly :)

My girl is bum high and I've never had a problem with her saddles slipping, neither has the saddle fitter commented on any issues with fitting her saddles.

The right saddle fitted by the right fitter won't slip - my clients' bum high horses generally get flat trees in a slightly smaller size than they can actually take (getting slightly away from that high croup) with some extra flock at the front to balance the saddle, plus slim rear panels. Point strap is essential but the tree must fit the horse really well and generously around the trapezius and even then some horses (a small minority) don't like them. You certainly DON'T want to be using any girth straps towards the back of the saddle if forward slippage is your issue.

I "dealt" with it by finally having a saddle hand made for her in Portugal which doesn't move, fits her perfectly and DIDN'T cost very much at all (waaay less than an off-the-peg bog standard). But it's not a modern saddle; it's a baroque one.
