Bum high

Please explain to a complete numpty about being bum high. Why do people think it is so bad. I have a 4 year old traditional cob, His bum is way up.

If he's four he probably has some growing to do then.

Being bum high makes it more difficult for a horse to work "correctly", they just can't tuck in in as easily and bring those long back legs through. Having said that my big mare is croup high and makes a very good job of trying.

Don't worry, your 4 year old will not be fully grown so there is a good chance his front end will catch up.

I have a slow maturing 6 year old Dutch warmblood who keeps on going bum high and then levels out.

The problem with being bum high is that the horse will tend to ride "downhill" with a tendency to fall onto his forehand.

Traditionals are slow burners and he could carry on growing for another 2-3 years yet... and that's before he starts to fill out!!

Also don't forget that most cobs are traditionally slightly bum high, I just did an internet search on images of cobs and this one is the first that appeared, see how his bum actually stands slightly higher than the wither....

I bought a 4 yo trad cob at the end of August & in that time his bum has shot up! He's going to be a tad bigger than I thought but hey ho.

Stinky is nearly 6 1/2 and his bum is up again - traditional cobs don't stop growing and/or filling out until 8 or even 9. The difference between Stinky now and when he was 4 is huge - gone from a MW to XW saddle and a good inch on the wither, and you can see he has a lot of filling out still to go. Our clydie is the same age and she too has a lot of filling out to do still, and also grew a good inch since she was 4.
