On another forum I'm probably about to get flamed as I'm the only person who responded with anything other than 'aaaaaah how sweet you are' to a query.

Someone's bitch whelped a week ago. Since then they have handled and weighed the pups every day, been palpating the bitch's stomach 'looking for anything wrong' every day, and squeezing all of her nipples every day to check none are blocked. And now the bitch is 'acting oddly' when they go near, whining and getting agitated. By the way, they have no actual vet knowledge, they are first time breeders, and have spent 2 weeks sleeping next to the dog in case of emergencies. they also stayed awake for 38 hours solid from when bitch showed first few signs of approaching labour, to the end of it all.

I'm the only one telling them to for god's sake leave the poor bloody dog alone. Everyone else thinks they are a lovely caring owner.

Bally hell! I have never bred from a dog in my life, but SERIOUSLY? If you had just had a kid would you appreciate some "aunt" squeezing your tits, and handling your kid wether you wanted them to or not, and not giving you a minute to yourself?

I imagine it is some "designer" mongrel too

Some people are somewhat lacking in sense.

Poor dog :(
Is it really that difficult of a concept to grasp that new mothers dont need a hugh amount of handling and that overhandling will just upset them.

Any idea of the type of bitch or amount of pups?
Seems odd to be weighing and double checking so much unless she has to many pups for her amount of teats....

Or are they just overly enthusiastic novices to breeding?

:-( the poor dog ..... why would they squeeze her nipples daily..surely they would know if the pups were not getting milk out of mum!
Poor thing needs space :-(

Can't see the point of that at all unless she is short of milk and they are concerned about puppies weight gain. Poor bitch, sounds like they are really stressing her, she'll start trying to hide her puppies next which could well lead to her harming them. :(

I check my bitches daily for any mastitus brewing, but I don`t weigh puppies ..it`s obvious by the way they feel if they are doing alright.Bull terrier breeders as a rule do not leave their bitches with their puppies, for fear of squashing or killing,so the litters are usually in a heated box and are put on the mother every two or three hours. Before you all howl,I do not do this ..unless the bitch is murderess to the puppies.I use a big foam sqaushy bed with 18" sides, plus a duvet folded inside..no squashed puppies possible, and leave alone.Admittedly my bull terriers are super mothers..or maybe it is because my method has allowed their natural instincts to come forward. Indeed bitches will get agitated by interference, and even attack their own puppies if too stressed..thats natural by the way.
It has taken nearly forty years of breeding these to buck the trend and take courage to try the squashy bed, most bullie people look at me and think I`m potty! There are a few brave souls who intend to try it out though,it will make for happier mothers if they do.:D

Thats interesting EK, its amazing how instinct does kick in. My mum had a lovely bitch, very laid back, but got really stressed with a litter. She killed a couple of pups from her first litter by constantly picking them up and trying to bury them . Just before she started whelping her second litter she disappeared across the field and was found in a hole she had dug on the bank of a stream, mum decided she obviously wanted to "go back to basics", so the standard whelping box was hastily discarded and a cave like box created. The bitch was put in there and whelped a litter of 7 pups, after a quick check they were left totally alone for the first few days, other than a head count when bitch went outside. After a week or so she was a super relaxed mum who didn't mind you doing whatever necessary with her babies.

Exactly MM! Teazel whelped her puppies and needed a bit of help with a couple, which she allowed.Once she had finished though it was neck over babies, eyes glowing and meaningful with a deep rumble that said P... Off. So off I went to bed, obediently.I was not allowed in with her to touch the puppies in her presence,so while she trotted out to be clean the needed care such as removing dew claws, checking them over ,got done. After that she was let back in with me staying back at the door ,not crowding her. After a fortnight she relaxed and I was allowed to handle babies while she was around. In other words a perfect mother,VERY unusual for my breed.
