My lurcher pup is now just over 9 months , I feed Wolfworthy as I wanted to feed raw but don’t have the freezer space , I also have 2 terriers and would prefer them all to be on the same food . The terriers are fine , firm poos , look well, plenty of energy etc, my lurcher has had soft pops and recently has had very cow pat type ( sorry if anyone is eating). It’s been so bad going to liquid I took him to the vet and have antibiotics, probiotics and a wormer just to be sure worms are under control . I am thinking of changing to a sensitive dog food but want to have a quality one. My other lurchers also had sensitive stomachs and I fed James well beloved turkey and rice kibble with good results. Do I go back to that even though it’s not supposed to be the best or has anyone any suggestions or have you tried the above food which seems to offer a solution. Help everyone ?

Looking at James well beloved which I know worked for my other lurchers , it has a lot less meat than others , I am tempted by burgess as it says it makes firm poos and that is the main problem, he is looking very well, shiny coat, bright eyes, very lively and happy , so he doesnt seem sick, just the poos are not right… the Wolfworthy has suited my terriers and wanted to keep them all on the same if possible ,

My older girl has always had a dodgy gut no matter what I fed so last year I tried something different and tried adding Canine Prime. It is a powder supplement, looks a bit like seaweed powder, and you just mix a small amount in to their normal food once a day, need to add a little water as it is very fine. I was very sceptical but amazingly she now has a nearly 100% good gut. Still has occasional bad days but very few. Might be worth trying along with what you are currently feeding.

Thanks, I’ve got a probiotic from the vets that I’m feeding at the moment and also have yumove probiotic which has just arrived so was thinking along the lines of a probiotic , I’m just wondering if the Wolfworthy is too rich for him so wanted ideas of food which would firm his poos …I’ve been looking on the all about dog food site and it’s a bit mind boggling

Wolfworthy has 16% sweet potato according to ingredients, that possibly could be a problem. The symptoms you describe could be leaky gut, it would be worth researching that. I definitely wouldn't feed the Burgess, it is very low in protein, contents include wheat, maize and beet pulp, which are not suitable for dogs to digest. Good probiotics should be helpful. Orijen (the ones without grains) is the closest that I found to raw, and Forthglade Just Range, variation on these brands daily also should help.

ETA It's the Burgess Greyhound and Lurcher, ingredients, that includes wheat, maize and dried beet pulp.

Canine Prime isn't an probiotic. It is a blend of all the things food can be lacking in. Mine went for a long time without improvement even when on probiotics but improved in days with the CP.

I have fed Burgess food for over 20 years without any problems. The dogs have always looked well and only had dodgy tummies when they have sampled stuff that they should not have eaten.

thanks that’s good to know, I might order the sensitive puppy one to try as I think the Wolfworthy may be too rich for him at the moment and I hope to be weaning him off chicken and rice soon so that may be a good first step to normal food

just had a look, it has probiotics in the blend with other things , how long does 1 tub last as it’s almost £50 and mine would need one and a half scoops a day

Yes I've fed Burgess sensitive for about 20 years as well. I tend to order the turkey one, I did go onto raw at one time but couldn't keep weight on one of my dogs so went back to Burgess, you can get some good prices online .

I find my greyhound does the best poos on grain free kibble, though I know that some people think it's potentially linked to DCM. I swap amongst different brands and varieties, but he's mostly fed on kibble with grain because it's more affordable - he's a big dog and I don't have a large budget. I find Autarky white fish and potato, and Country Dog salmon and sweet potato (from Mole Online) suit him very well. My mum's dog did well on Simpsons lamb and potato, that's a good brand.

I avoid anything chicken or beef based, they definitely doesn't suit him, nor a couple of my previous greyhounds. Chicken fat in a recipe is fine, it's chicken protein that can be problematic. I stick to lamb, duck and fish kibbles, they've all been fine on them. My previous greyhound did well on Millie's Wolfheart Countryside and Riverside mixes.

Nourish looks to be good, though it's just one brand of many that are actually the same product sold under different brand names, such as Huntland and Tickety Boo. I think Nourish is a little cheaper than the others. James Wellbeloved was bought by one of the huge corporations - possibly Mars? and some think that the quality went down afterwards.

Dog food is an absolute minefield, and there's so much choice that it's mind-blowing! I always recommend the allaboutdogfood website, it has lots of good articles and a great dog food selector tool. There's another tool where you can type in the ingredients of a dog food and it gives it a quality rating. Obviously it's not the be all and end all, but it's a good starting point.

thank you, I’ve been on the allaboutdogfood site that# where I found the burgess sensitive, I’ve been feeding grain free for a while so always go for that anyway, I’ve ordered the burgess puppy sensitive with turkey and will transition him on to that after chicken and rice , and hopefully gradually change him back to wolfworthy as long as his poos are ok, then If They go soft again I will know wolfworthy is too rich for him and will put him back on burgess and keep the terriers on wolfworthy until it runs out ,then think again. Bloom8n dogs !!!

Just in case anyone is interested my lurcher did well on the burgess sensitive turkey&rice puppy and is now on Burgess sensitive turkey adult and is doing fine, I have now transitioned my terriers on to it as well as I prefer all on the same food so all good.. and it works out cheaper than Wolfworthy which helps although wasn’t the reason for change
