I found this video whilst looking at the course preview for this year....

Its the highlights from Burghley in 1990!

Fascinating to watch- both how the course has changed, and how the riding has changed!

I loved watching King Boris and Mary 'Thompson'!!

Some of the falls look horrendous... especially lisa Evans.

Its amazing how they were once allowed to just get back on and continue

Wow, will watch rest tomorrow!

Funny how the fences were bigger, scarier almost like steeplechase fences were and more complex.. and riders didn't really take a pull like they do now! :)

Yeah, I think it was better then than it is now..

Exactly - I love the fence where they had the option to go straight through or a diagonal line through. We don't have something like that anymore.. it's a real nice fence, makes the horse and the rider think. If they go straight through they have to keep the momentum if they go diagonally they have to keep the right balance and line! :)

Also funny to see how little gimmicks there are - majority in numnahs that are cut to the saddle and hunter breastplates or breastplates!

No dead sheep in sight..

Yes, it's all too twisty and technical now, too many corners, skinnies, awkward distances designed to 'catch them out'. I'd much rather see them gallop, bold horses and riders rewarded xc and 'catch them out' in the SJ instead, that's what it was meant for..

And the horses were so much fitter 25 years ago.. After all they had the steeplechase and the roads and tracks.. they could afford to gallop like hell through these courses.

Wonder how many horses would survive roads and tracks nowadays and then do a xc course.

And another thing.. ground was rock hard. Horses didn't struggle too much.. nowadays god forbid the horses would be galloped on hard ground.

Personally.. I don't care for hard ground.. I know my horse's legs but then again i'm not jumping 4*!

Fascinating ,the ground looked awful the course so much more fun for the horses without all the skinnies they have now.

Why are these riders invincible? rotational fall and horse lands on top of them, simply brush off the dirt and get back on to complete the round. I'm quite sure with the lack of safety gear a "modern" rider would have broke their back, neck, every limb and had some permanent head trauma :p

Loved watching it, now off to watch ones from previous years !

Possibly the school of hard knocks which riders don't get a chance to learn or participate in due to H & S. Riders today have been made too soft, the same as their horses but back then, there was a definite season for eventing, same as there was for hunting or show jumping (everyone turned their horses away after HOYS until after Christmas, unlike now) so horses had the time to recover, unlike today where they're lucky to get more than a month's break before they're back on the treadmill and there are so many advanced events now they do short format.
Short format has caused the huge change to eventing as it was and not for the better IMHO.

.

Indeed, going even further back the eventing season was divided into two -spring and autumn - with a rest/holiday for all in the middle as well.

I'm really glad you've all enjoyed watching it as much as me!

It's funny isn't it, nowadays riders would complain or withdraw if the ground was as hard, but then they went faster on it, and had the roads/tracks/steeplechase to do as well!

It seems there was a much more get on with it attitude then. Although I suppose riders are probably much more bothered about a horses record, and although there still aren't many 4*s they can retire and re-route somewhere else

That was the first year I went to Burghley, with my cousin, having only been to Chatsworth and Locko previously. I was totally entranced........ the leaf pit looked unbelievable....... will have to have a watch, might spot even spot myself in the crowd!
