Burghley a feature on bbc breakfast!!!

Yet another advert for P2 - they must be so happy! Bet Laura will get lots of nice freebies from that (not saying she said it intentionally, just that I bet she will)

Yet again, despite what paramedics/anyone says if you cannot replicate the exact fall again with/without things you cannot say that any particular thing helped, but lets not let science get in the way eh? Obviously its great if it did help, as she is back riding again, but you know, just saying ;)

Letter of the week in HH was about compulsory air jacket, at £400 it would put me off eventing as its yet another cost before you can get on the course, I would bet that BS and BD are happy as it makes there sports look more affordable!

I don't really BE (not helped by lame horse!) but if they were compulsory I would buy an air jacket, and that would pretty much mean I coudln't afford to compete for a year! :rolleyes3:

Even as an air jacket fan I would strongly oppose any move to make Air Jackets compulsory at BE.
This is purely because there needs to be much more testing done on them.
Also at the moment Point 2 have too much of a stranglehold on the market. IMO due to the type of company they are this is being detrimental to movement forward in ALL types of body protector safety.

If BE want to make them compulsory then they need to be pushing for standardised testing of all types, for these results to be made transparent & visible for the general public. If these results show they do save lives then they need to be made cheaper/more accessible to EVERYONE!!

Also what makes me REALLY angry about the whole Laura Collett thing is the air jacket DID NOT save her life.
What saved her life was prompt, good medical attention at scene, being moved quickly to a good trauma centre & excellent hospital care!!
This is fact.
Trust me had Laura not received those things even with an inflated air jacket she would've died.
This is fact.
However it MAY be that the air jacket along with her other safety equipment reduced her injuries sufficiently so that she had an increased chance of surviving.

I think to make air jackets compulsory would be a very unwise move by BE. however, if they do eventually decide to go ahead with this ruling, I think the only way it would work is if the air jacket manufacturers offered a substantial discount to BE members to make it more affordable. A lot of us event on a shoestring and this would be grossly unfair to force us to potentially give up a sport that we love because the cost of continuing became prohibitive. At the end of the day it's like anything else involving your own body and health, you should have a choice, I don't believe it should be made for you.

This exactly!!! the whole thing really winds me up, and I'm a fan (although I have the lessor known competitor!)

I'm sorry I disagree I think Laura's air jacket DID contribute to saving her life as did the excellent medical care she received at he event . Tom also received excellent medical care on the site of the incident whether he could have been saved if he was wearing an air jacket will sadly never be known , however I have a sinking feeling, if he was he would have had a chance .

It may have contributed, I'm not disagreeing, but her hat was pretty mashed up as well so that also contributed. We will never know to what extent either piece of equipment actually did have an effect though so the point is we cannot say for certain that they 'saved her life'
If she hadn't had any medical treatment even with a hat & inflated air jacket she would've died. No question. So it's not a bold statement to say that the medical treatment saved her life.

My friend had a car accident, her car was bright yellow. Now the lorry driver that hit her was able to see her quicker & tried to stamp on his breaks a moment quicker so the lorry wasn't going quite as fast when it hit her...but it still did. Her seatbelt prevented her going through the windscreen, all her airbags activated to stop her being crushed or hitting the dashboard, there was no car directly in front for her car to be squashed into.
When the police saw the state of her car they were amazed that she had got out alive let alone with minor injuries!
Now I think we'd all be stupid to say that the car's colour 'saved her life' (which is how I feel people are treating Laura's air jacket) rather it was a part of the things that saved her life. Do you understand what I'm getting at? (It makes sense in my head :D)

You cannot compare Laura's fall & Tom's fall into a simple one was wearing an air jacket, one wasn't. The very nature is there are too many other factors to consider.

Look, I believe in air jacket technology. I've defended them on here, I WEAR ONE!!!
What concerns me is that people will buy them thinking they can do x,y & z when truly we just don't know because there just hasn't been enough testing. That's all I want [sigh] There should be continued movement forward in all aspects of XC safety wear.

Another thing that did irk me was Laura retweeted about 50 tweets from people marvelling at Point 2, saying they saved her life, amazed at how brilliant they are & how they were going to buy them.
How many tweets did she send praising the 'volunteer' paramedics & doctors at scene, or praising the hospital where she was treated.....one :(

So a company who will stand to make £100,000's this weekend after a clever bit of PR but the true lifesavers get barely a mention. Nice.

I also still prefer my exo body protector (not wanting to turn this into another exo v. air jacket! Still think there needs to be a hybrid/combined one developed...) but just mean surely that is my choice rather than air jacket being compulsory? And agree this would add to the already high cost of eventing -so I tend to prepare at unaff events alot instead. Even tickets to just watch burghley dressage were alot yesterday so didn't go (but having said that burghleytv is v good!) It would be very interesting though to see exactly where all of our membership and entry fee money goes... that way it would put an end to all the 'prize money should be higher' 'entry fee lower' debates if we could see it is all fair/justifiable.
