Burghley Horse Trials - places to stay??

thanks for that, have added my name to the list.

just out of interest. If I was to stay somewhere that is 5 minutes drive in what is it like getting in on the morning of the competition?

thinking of going Friday and sat.

Depends where you come from.. We stayed at a B&B about 10 miles away one year, and on XC day it took nearly an hour to get in. Last year we took the caravan and stayed out near Rutland, and got in with no problems..

ps. Lots of locals do B&B just for that weekend, we booked a month before the time we did B&B... Stamford tourist office is very clued up about things and have good suggestions.

The other option is to hire a caravan and camp on site for 4 days. A friend of mine did this, hired a caravan which was delivered to the site.

On site caravan; delivered and set up for you. It's great fun and dogs come too :D

If not, I always like the look of the Sibson Inn which is about a mile or so south of Burghley.

Stamford will be difficult to book now I suspect as most are booked year to year however you could stay anywhere that has a train station as Stamford station is only a 10 min walk.

I've stayed a few times now, but always been a cheapskate and booked into the Travelodge in Kettering, about 15 miles away, they always seem to have deals on with rooms for £15 if you book ahead. Never had a problem getting in (Friday or Saturday) but we do always aim to get there before 8am.

I agree with this, we usually end up staying in a soulless chain hotel - because I always leave it too late for local B&B's. To be honest I'm only there to sleep as rest of day/evening at Burghley so I dont really care if its not romantic/full of charactor/nice breakfast! I also have never had a problem getting in. In fact the last 2 years I have arrived near Stamford at 9am ish and driven straight in. (even when the A1 was closed year before last)

We went in 2011 and stayed in Peterborough. Took the train up on XC day, and the car on the Sunday (to make going home easier). Train was really easy, although next time I think we'd stay north of Burghley rather than South to save driving a bit further. This was mainly because there had been an accident on the motorway just beyond (but unrelated to) Burghley, on the Friday night, and traffic was horrendous!

The only potential downside would be deciding what to wear. XC day was luckily dry, but the Sunday was pretty miserable and we were very very glad we had the car to switch footwear and jackets.

Hoping to take my 6yo daughter this year... any recomendations on family places to stay within walking distance or a short taxi ride? ( running for hills as should have thought about this earlier )

hi all

Hi there
Not sure whether it will be a help or appropriate - but we do have an American RV 33 foot Motorhome with SLIDEOUT (makes the lounge 4 foot + wider ) which last year we placed on Burghley golf course i.e. 400 yds from the venue which worked well for some
It sleeps up to 7
Would consider doing the same again if required :-)
