Go for it!! Us 'ordinaries' can do well, as long as the horse is mature enough to cope with it. My latest youngster was partly purchased with BYEH in mind but just proved to 'baby' and needed more time,
but with a more mature type its easily possible to produce the polished performances that the pro's do!!!!
Its good experience for them but a fine line for some that just aren't ready. Go for it and good luck!!!!
I had a go at 3 BYEH qualifiers on a 5 year old in 2008. It was good fun & a worthwhile experience (for both myself & my horse)- as long as your horse is more than ready as it can be a lot for them to take in at a young age- particularly if you got to the Final. Having said that, after watching a lot of BYEH qualifiers & finals over the years, you can't help but wonder how it can't be a name game when you see the pro's on some distinctly average horses being placed above amateurs or even other professionals who are maybe not as well known on some lovely horses- but then I guess it's up to the judges, not me!
I sold a horse to the Uk and he is being aimed at BYEH this year.i have to say I am really excited about the prospect of him getting there.I know it takes a good horse to qualify but I am really keeping everything crossed that he makes it as I will definately be going to watch if he does.I would say give it a go.It will be great experience if nothing else.
I did it with my horse when he was 4 and 5. I really enjoyed them. It did seem to be the 'names' that won them, but its a really good experience. I managed to get a few placings but didnt manage to qualify for the final. The only thing is that you dont get any feedback, but i saw a few people who went and asked the judges after.
I would definately recommend you to do them though!
My boy did these as a 4 and 5 year old and was well placed in all. I did all the producing but admit i did get my friend who is a 4* event rider to ride him as i felt i would melt under the pressure and also not do my talented horse justice. I loved the feeling of having my amateur produced horse competing against the top youngsters and felt proud to see him go so well. I was afraid as a riding club rider that i would stand out like a sore thumb. With hindsight...i wish i could have worked harder to become better to show him off but that is this years goal! I am aiming to do a BE 6 yr old class by the end of the season. Good Luck and go for it.
