I have a 4 year old (as at 1 Jan but could still be 3 as I don't know her month of birth as not on her Irish passport) mare who i have owned since November and was broken last August. I have been taking things very steady as she is for keeps and is not a "buy and sell on" project. However, my trainer has recently said to me that we should enter the Burghley Young Event Horse. Now i have no idea of what this involves as I show jump (with the occasional dressage thrown in) and am in no way an eventer!! From what I gather it doesn't involve any cross country though so i might be alright!

It would be nice to have a goal with my horse and something to aim for, but i was just wondering if anyone could tell me anything about the competition (i have a read the bit thats on the website but doesn't tell me much). Do people think its a good idea for a baby or is it actually a case of a bit much too soon and only for those professionals that are more interested in selling the horses on than keeping them long term?

thanks

I was thinking of taking my 4 year old but we have only just started jumping him... So I don't know whether this would be a bit out of his reach.

Just saw on the link an earlier poster gave you: Jump heights for 4yo is 90cm, 5yo is 1.05

Everything you need to know is on that website, under judge's guidlines and competition details.

They are good educational classes but can be subjective. Jetset, you could aim for some of the later qualifiers. We did the 4 yr old classes last year. Ours had only jumped a cross pole in May. She won a qualifier in July and came 2nd at the final

Thanks for that... the only one in this area is in June as there are not many qualifiers from what I can gather :(

Thanks all and sorry for being dim as all the details are on the website which somehow i missed!

Jetset - I am in exactly the same position. We have only really just started jumping - did our first few fillers on Saturday. The only qualifier near me is in July so i'm not sure we will be ready either! I can't imagine actually cantering round a whole course. We mainly trot to fences at the moment!
