After the disaster that was West Wilts I was absolutely adamant we had to get round Burnham Beeches. Having enquired about the venue I had received a lot of mixed feedback from people so I wasn’t expecting too much. To the contrary though – when I turned up to walk the course I was really impressed. It looks like they have really pulled their finger out and made a good job of it, The course was fenced off and really well prepared and I thought the going was good. The jumps were all fairly kind and the course flowed nicely.. The show jumping was also nice and not massive. I thought it was a little bit tight in the arena but that’s only because I go flying round on a big 17hh horse and find most things tight!
The dressage was located in another field a short hack down the road which was a minor downer. The only real issue on the day was that no oen was manning the gate into and out of the field. Whilst there was someone stood on the road stopping traffic the gate was always open so it went from the warm up onto a busy road. Winnie has had a good few bronks in the dressage warm up so I am always a bit conscious. Anyway, on the hole I was impressed and keen to give it a go. We also had lovely times – 12.04 dressage. There were good times between the phases too which was perfect..

On the day Winnie was impeccable – chilled, had manners and really did me proud. It was like riding a different horse to the one I took to WW. The dressage was ok. I made the mistakes mostly and he cantered before he should have done and we ended up with 40.5 which was a shame but it wasn’t catastrophic! We seem to get consistently bad marks for our walk.. must practice!

Show jumping – despite the massive bronk and running backwards because of the generator by the warm up he was amazing! Best round yet, flowing, soft in my hand but forward.. the boy went clear – woohoo!

I was sooooo determined to complete a BE90 on him – last two we eliminated in the xc, first one I fell of, second one, he just panicked and wouldn’t go.

Anyway, the course was nice and I couldn’t wait to start which he do did just fine. The first two jumps went really nicely! The third was a horrid carrot jump that you approached down hill (after a lot of rain) and under a low branch and we scrambled over it. The fourth a house jumped fine, the fifth the rails also fine all the way up to 8 which was a big hedge.
We had out first refusal which was gutting but it was a big old hedge with a big drop the other side. I gave him a whack and he shot off side ways. I could hear the tannoy saying number 82 had gone on a diversion back to the course! Haha Oh dear! But he went over on the second attempt and carried on to jump a wall with humpty dumpty sat on and up some steps!

It was like the penny suddenly dropped and he started to enjoy it, he was no longer tense and he found his rhythm and popped from fence to fence perfectly all the way home. I could hear my friends cheering on the last one which made me giggle!! So pleased with him!!

He’s come so far from the gangly baby I bought 2 years ago. The most satisfying thing is that I’ve taught him myself. Its not the quickest way of doing it and there are times when I wished I could afford two and have one slightly more experienced go round one but that’s the way it is and now he’s catching up! I don’t think the height is going to be an issue with him it was more his brain and him getting used to it all. So – Munstead is next. We need a better dressage score and a double clear this time. I am so excited by him because everything we’ve thrown at him he’s starting to get and take in his stride.

I can't put a piccy in here!! Heres the link to winnie on Ultimate Images - He's the one in the first 5 pictures - bay horse, I am no 82!

Aww, well done :) You sound so pleased! I heard good things about the ground this year too, so I may try there again next year (went in 2009 and ned didn't like the hard XC)
I am off to Munstead too, will look out for you! :)

Well done!

I must have seen you as my Dressage time was just before yours lol!!

Good luck at Munstead, will see you there also :D

What number were you? I warmed up for ages to gauge his mood so probably did see you! I need to go away and learn how to walk properly because I scored really low in my final walk and walk on a free rein!!

Can't wait for Munstead - going to try and school there next week!

I was No.31 in Section A! my dressage time was 11.58 or something like that! cant remember the exact time!!
i was also very impressed with the ground and the hardwork they had put in (and thankful for the rain on Thursday). I must say it was probably my favourite event this season!! loved it!!!
Dod you go XC went it pee'd down?! I did, and I was in short sleeves, got soaked!!! you can see all the rain clearly in all my pics!! I lost my rains about 5 times and they were so slippy!!! :p

Well done!! :D Glad it was such a positive day; you seemed a little down the last time! :)

I was getting a bit frustrated at not finishing. I had also just read the post where people were discussing when you decide an event horse isn't going to be an event horse and lots of people were saying that if a horse had been eliminated twice they would consider it not an event horse. Winnie had just been eliminated for the second time..!! I was positive it was all down to greenness - hope so and that he's getting there now!

Thats also a nice start time! It peed down when my friend went and I sat in the car :). Stupid winnie won't stand in a box/trailer on his own so he stood out in the rain getting soaked! I grabbed my posh saddle and put that under cover. It was spitting a bit when I went - I wasn't going to use studs because the going was so good but it had got a bit slippy - I slid into the carrot fence! I didn't like that one at all.

I saw a couple of riders walking back like little drowned rats - maybe you were one of them! haha!

I was def my best event this year - I hope Munstead is as good!!

Have you been to Munstead before? I did the Intro beginning of the year, going back to have a crack at the BE100....

I was slightly concerned about the Carrot fence as heard it caused a bit of trouble! I was ready for my horse to have a look but he just took off into it and didnt even notice the carrots!! haha! How did you find the steps?? I had no control the whole way round and he went so fast up it, he bounced it! hehehe he is such a nutter... we were also going a bit fast into the barrells and he did one massive long stride instead of 2!!! :D:D:D

There are some pics somewhere of me going over the carrot fence and it looks as awkward as it felt. It wasn't like it was super technical I just didn't like it for some reason.

The steps jumped ok actually - the commentator said my horse had a rather surprised look on his face as he came up them which is probably about right. I had no reins either I don't so lucky he hopped up ok. I thought I'd have issues with the castle but he did that ok - He was forward going but I had to really really ride into each of the fences for his confidence.

When we jumped over the style we went round the side of the house and Winnie took one look at that Novice fence and jumped sideways - haha - so funny I laughed out loud and, much to his delight, took him round the side!!

I've not been to Munstead before - he wasn't fit enough for the last one. he had some time off with growing pains (thats all we could put it down to) and he wasn't ready so this is my first time. I have heard some good things so I am excited about. Good on you for doing the BE100. If Munstead goes well and BCA (I am doing that too) I may have a go at BE100 at Coombelands!!

Good luck for Munstead - well have to swap/times numbers etc :) x

Funny you should say that about that wall! i totally forgot it was around the corner and my horse clocked it, locked on and went for it, it was a mission to steer him to the side!! did a sigh of relief that i didnt jump it and get elimated!!
Munstead is ok, I like it there... I like the SJ arena and the going on the XC is quite sandy... its a nice little event. I did some jump judging last time as well on the day i wasnt competing which was fun!!
See you there ! :)

My friend went schooling round the course on monday and jumped down the fence before and straight over that fence - said it was awesome. Winnie isn't quite there yet.. it was funny though.

Do you apply to jump judge through the volunteer bit on BE? I'd happily do it too.

See you though - exciting!

Well I am on the Facebook group "british eventing volenteers". and also i know the people at Munstead so I get all the emails asking for volenteers. I also like to do twelesdwon when not competing as close to home... I quite enjoy doing it, and also it helps your entry if there is ever a ballot... Was going to do a day at highclere this weekend but I'm busy. I just try to do a few local events every year. I like to give something back as I know alot of people give up there time regulary to help when we compete :p

Thanks for that - I have just requested to join the group! I feel the same as you - happy to give something back.

Great report I can really feel your happiness from it, well done!! I train my horse all by myself too, taught him to jump ect and it does take longer. I feel I'm sort of muddling along sometimes but it is SO worth it and every success really feels brilliant. I'm so pleased for you :).

Great report, well done you! Best of luck with getting that double clear - I too am hoping for one of those!

Thank you for the nice comments!

Lets hope double clears all round on our next outings!

Also sounds like theres a good crowd of us on here going! HHO meet up indeed!

Good luck in BE100! :)
