I guess i should caveat this with *do not try this without veterinary guidance etc etc* but i was thinking last night about the fact my mare often has a grumbling gassy spasmodic colic which sneaks up over time and as long as i catch it early and vet comes and gives her some buscopan that sorts her out... I know the signs now so its not a huge issue but could be if i was away.. but is of course expensive!

You can buy buscopan over the counter for humans. Anyone know of anyone who uses that rather than intravenous.

Once again - NOT PLANNING TO DON"T PANIC.. not without consulting my vet.. but essentially its the same thing so wondered if anyone knew whether it is the same stuff exactly?

I have found buscopan extremely effective for symptoms of IBS, I have no idea of the dosage a horse would need as the tablets I take are tiny & about 10mg if my memory serves me right :)

I have injected buscopan before quite a couple of times,( before I knew my horse had ulcers- after treatment the colic was gone) the vet showed me how to inject. I was already a pro at listening with a stethoscope, vet showed me how to do internal investigation too (or however you call it)

I have been doing SC injections, fluids, chipping etc. with small animals being a volantair at a shelter for a long long time.

But injecting IV bucopan is not without risk, if you miss the vein you can get really bad abcesses, and if you hit the deeper vein your horse can go into shock.

Another risk of Buscopan, is not all horses can tolerate it. My horse is allergic to it.
With this in mind, I would be careful about giving it to a horse who hasn't had it before administered by a vet.
OP, I know your horse has had it before but I'm just thinking of others who read this thread and think it might be a good idea to try.

I asked my vet about whether I could carry a stock of oral Buscopan, for my gassy colic prone horse. She said that it has to be administered by IV injection, and can't be given orally. I didn't think to ask her why (wish I had now). She gave me some sachets of bute to have on standby instead. (He's had the vet out twice for gassy colic, and was given IV bute and buscopan both times.)

I take Buscopan tablets for my IBS, and it's great. I buy it from Sainsburys :).

I didn't know buscopan was available over the counter for human use. Would it help for kidney stones ? (an early inherritance) Had another attack last week and seriously, if you had a Railway nearby you would consider throwing yourself in front of a train. My secretary has them as well (she has kids-I don't so can't compare) she says she will happily have 5 more kids if she never has a kidney attack again :-)
Have diclofenac (for my backpain) but was of no use from the vomiting. sorry- offtopic

I don't understand vets giving bute for colic, as it is really bad for the stomach. Finadyne also is bute but given IV doesn't work as heavily on the stomach.

My colicky prone Horse is on oral buscapan on vets recommendations for when he colics , do have to crush them and syringe down but works effectively for him as bute doesn't touch him and responds well to the buscapan obv of doesn't settle then vets get called ,
