Potential new horse was vetted today, went very well, only one issue that may or may not be a problem but it's fixable so that's ok. Took him on a hack with another horse. Other horse had a MAJOR! spook rearing and nearly landing on us, potential new horses reaction was to turn, trot a step and pulled up nicely - very good boy! So got back to yard, big smile from me, bought the boy and he's coming home tomorrow! :D

Boy is arriving today! Been on a mad shopping trip and think i've got everything to start me off with.

body brush
dandy brush
mane/tail brush
curry comb metal/plastic
hoof pick and brush
headcollar
lead rope
salt lick
cotton wool
sponges
feed bucket
face brush
poo picker
sweat scraper

Is there anything else I need urgently that i've forgotton or will that start me off? I was expecting him to arrive so soon, thought I'd have a couple of days to get organised!

Another 20 hoofpicks, because they're renowned for always going walkies!

Seriously:

Water buckets
I make sure I've always got a spare headcollar and rope.
Basic first aid kit - Gamgee, Melolin, wound spray/gel, Sudocrem, Hibiscrub, vet wrap, Vaseline etc.
Several old, clean towels/tea towels
Fly repellent (if you plan on using it)
Is he going to need any rugs?

Got a water bucket
Will get a spare headcollar and rope in near future.
Fly repellent i'm going to make my own but i've bought the sprayer for it.
Rugs he shouldn't do. He's a hairy cob and he hasn't had rugs before but once he's here i'll measure him up and maybe look for a lightweight more to keep rain off him then anything else.
Old towels i have plenty but it looks like another trip to the tack shop tomorrow for a first aid kit! I did look for Hibiscrub but couldn't see any, will have to look harder.
Thanks for your help :)

Wow exciting day! Let us know once he arrives!

Also unless you have bought him with tack and rugs then some people don't even give you a headcollar to start with (one horse that I bought silly expensive money didn't even come with a head collar, they just unloaded him and took head collar off and left him there naked!).

Best of luck with your purchase, we will look forward to hearing details/pics etc :)

Definately agree with the 20 hoof picks, they are like socks notorious for going wondering, however much you try to have a few 1x o/s stable, 1x o/s paddock, 1 x in riding jacket you just cant help going walkies with it and before you know it you have no idea where you put it.

All the best with your new boy, may you both have heaps of fun

I will I will :D

He's coming from a dealer so he's got nothing at all bless him. He's 4 years old and even only got a name 3 or 4 weeks ago. Ahh just got the call to say he's on his way! I'm so not organised!

I must be the one stealing everybodys hoof picks. I used to have them coming out of my ears at the riding school, one in every pocket. Now I have atleast 10 in my grooming kit. Only two of which were originally mine.

Congratulations on the new horse! I love buying for a new horse. I'm super excited for you, I think you have everything you need to keep him happy for while.
Good Luck with him x

Thank you. I hope i've got the basics and he'll be a happy boy.

Oooohh - how exciting - good luck and let us know how you get on.

How about a few welcoming carrots?

Thank you. I tried him with a carrot, he was far from impressed! Seems he's an apple boy!

He is beautiful! Good luck with his arrival. I took one quick photo, i'll attempt to put it on!

So he's arrived. He's in his field happily hoovering up the grass. You'd think the boy had never been fed! We did a little lead rein work around the field and he met a few of the neighbours. He's got a new buddy right next door and a girlfriend further up. Boy wastes no time! Just got home and i'm shattered. Will try to get picture up in a bit :)
