I have just been offered a place on a quiet farmyard with lovely large stables and a field in which to school. I would be the only one there so would have to get a companion for my horse which would bring the cost up to aprox £170. For £220 I am currently in a busy DIY livery yard with an ok school but a few people I dont like very much, but I wouldn't need the companion. What would you do?

I have just moved from a busy livery yard to a quieter, small private yard (only 5 horses) and it is absolute bliss compared to where I was before.

I used to be on a big DIY livery yard, around 40 horses, school, farm hack, wash room etc.

Then I moved to a much much smaller yard max 13 horses, individual turnout although you have to build your own fields and do a few reapirs here and there. Stables are all purpose built but not fantastic. OK outdoor school.

I can honestly say I would never go back to the bigger commerical yards! My horses are happier and you don't have to put up with the never ending novices (they only want a pretty looking stable!!)

Could you not get a goat/sheep as a companion??

A quiet farm works well for me! I like the quieter life, and the smaller bill at the end of the month. also i can do without the hassle of big livery yards.

I stable at a friends farm, and am the only livery. My horse is on fabulous grazing, I have a lovely big stable, and a school. It's a wonderful place to be.

However, I am missing the companionship of others - and find myself a bit stuck in terms of sharing transport to go to shows, fun rides etc.

So whilst it has lots of pluses there is also a real downside to being on your own.

Definatly small yard iv just this week moved my mare to a beautiful tranquil little yard 6 horses including mine every 1 gets on nothing goes missing, no bitching i do miss the get togethers every month but you learn who your real friends are good luck x

I have to agree with the quiet farm voters! I moved from a busy livery yard, with 'yard' meetings and ridiculous rules and regulations causing loads of friction and bad feeling - different rotas coming out each week, complaints on boards about people leaving a broom in the wrong place etc. It was really quite stressful, and am sure that the horses suffer also due to the stressed out owners who came to enjoy their horses but inadvertantly got tangled up in loads of silly politics.

My new farm is wonderful, blissful, and yes - it is quieter, but in fact that has led to my joining a local riding club and becoming much more involved with shows, both entering and helping. My horse now has the life of riley - is spoilt with lush grazing, a huge stable, free hay and a very happy owner. Go for it!!

I moved from a very big livery yard/RS about 7 months ago where there were 70 other liveries. The facilities were great but it was always busy and you were always sharing the school with at least 3 other riders and sometimes up to 10. I moved to a smaller yard albeit it's not a farm and there are 4 or 5 other liveries there and great facilities.

The only thing I'd struggle with at the yard you've described would be the lack of schooling facilities during the winter.

I've recently relocated and moved back to a large busy yard, a tad unorganised, but I love it.

Previously I was on a small private yard, lovely YO, nice paddocks, beautiful satbles and secure storage etc ..... I really missed the buzz and company

quiet farm. I just moved from a big yard to a small farm it's awesome. And in a livery yard there are always people and kids screaming touching your horse, even leaving gates open. I love being on a quiet farm, so does my horse!

I've also just moved from a big yard to a small private one. Much prefer the small private yard but I can see why if you're younger and don't have own transport or need people to hack out with or get advice from, that a bigger yard might be better. I do think horses are better away from constant hustle and bustle. Horses thrive on routine and the problem with big yards is that everyone does their horses at different times, which can be very unsettling.

I am currently on a quiet farm but am moving to a busy yard at the end of the month. I thought id love it being quiet, but its so lonely

I miss the Christmas rides, the buzz and having lots of people to talk to and ask advice
