OH has been booked to transport 7 horses to the local slaughter house in Nove Ligure. All of the horses are heavyweights, 2 Ardennes, 1 Clydesdale, 1 TRP and 3 youngsters of mixed breeding. OH sees nothing too awful about the trip but Im feeling betrayed. I don't know if I will be able to see him in the same light but as he rightly says..'if its not me, it will be someone else'. I know he is right but still...!!!What do you think?

ahhhh NO!! suppose if its his job then he has to do it...think of the money.
but if i was in Italy he could redirect and drop them all to me instead...x

Seems mean because we love horses so much but cows and sheep and pigs are lovely animals too but (assuming you eat eat meat!) we don't think too long about their trips to the slaughterhouse... but this does seem like betrayal assuming they have been someone's friend, although they may have just lived in a field like a cow. I am rambling now, but it is not an easy question to answer :(

The horses are evidentally unwanted.

At least your OH can ensure their future is painless. If they don't go to the slaughter house they may well end up being passed from pillar to post between owners who may not be in a position to give them the care, feed and attention they need.

I know what you mean but would you feel the same if he was taking cattle/pigs/sheep?

While I would struggle with it too (in fact, I'd probably insist on going to hold them ) rationally, they are meat animals in this case just like any other and as long as they are treated well in life, travelled as little as possible and killed humanely, it's not the worse thing in the world.

Seems a shame :( but i guess you cant save them all. Very sad i try not to think about it to much as i guess theres nothing much that can be done, to many people breeding to many horses that really never had much hope even before they were born, makes me so sad and angry :( but i just look after and love my own horse the best i can and it helps knowing he'll never make that journey..x

Anyone want to eat dog!!!! ive got some koreans coming over soon oh well I should be thankfull there not from some south pacific head hunter tribe:D mind looking at how horrible
most kids are .... it would be less unplesant than having to eat horse, italian baby burger anyone .... as long as their kept and transported humanly of coarse .... the suffering
of a lot of rumainan horses go for so a spaggeti muncher can have a plate of salami
is not funny so we should set good example ....

At least they'll be properly transported, and that the journey isn't too long. And you know they don't know they're going for slaughter.

all of the horses belong to one owner who used them in weight competitions. Idea is...attach horse to a sledge, add weight to said sledge and see how far horse can pull sledge. After each 'pull' more weight is added till only one horse remains. Its a horrible competition and many horses end up completely buggered due to heat stress, tendon injuries and burst blood vessels.
The trip from the yard to the slaugher house is abot 12 miles so maybe they are some of the 'lucky' ones. Maybe he is actually braver than me, there is no way I could load them up and....! :O

Its very sad after all that horses have done for mankind from wars to peace helped us on our rise from barbarism to our so called civalised society today, some of us still treat them as mear objects so sad how some of us betray our faithfull servants..

Yes, look at it this way. If your OH is a nice and kind and decent chap (which I am sure he is) then they will go to their end kindly and with minimal fuss. Be proud of your chap and yes it's sad many have a "use em up and spit em out" attitude to their horses but it could be worse, the owner could seek to make as much money as possible out of them and flog them on God knows where.

In that case, it sounds as though he'll be doing them a favour.
I don't think the problem is that horses end up at a slaughter house, so long as their journey is short and they are treated humanely on the way and when they get there, it's how their lives are lived that matters. It's a good job there are people like your OH who will provide a humane service.

I guess your OH's transport is clean, safe, humane etc? If so, good on him IMO, he can make sure, personally, that some of these horses' last hours are as stress free and comfortable as possible. They will go to slaughter, whether your OH takes them or somebody else does, but at least this way you know they have been taken there safely and happily.
It's not nice, but it's going to happen, it happens a lot. If they have been used in these Weight Competitions (which I haven't heard of  They sound awful!) I suspect it's kinder than making them continue :(

Poor sods.
