My navi horse, Maya is lame again, just started a course of bute, I am thinking forward a bit to the future.
I don't want to give her bute long term.
Can anyone recommend a good alternative (that works!) that you can give long term if needed?

Is there a reason you don't want to give it long term? My tb has navicular and is on one danilon a day the vet has said danilon is alot kinder and does have the same side effects.

Otherwise i have had success with buteless by equine america for my pony with arthritis.

My navicular TB is also on 1 danilon a day, have tried Boswella, Tumeric and Alpha bute, none of which work as well as the danilon. I do feed Restore to help his liver deal with it!

I dont think anything is as good as bute.I think that you would take paracetamol everyday if you were in pain so I'm not going to stop my horse from having his pain relief either. Also nobute products effect the stomach in the same way generally

bute is a good drug for pain relief and anti imflamm. as is danelon. properly trialled and tested. homeopathic treatments can be good but not trialled and tested the same way as POMs. bute at the correct level will give your horse the help he needs. devils claw is as toxic/poss more toxic on the liver than bute for long term use. i would stick with the bute personnally. but i would suggest that you talk to your vet re long term treatment and see what he thinks to alternatives.

I agree with the advice given so far. Bute is far better than anything you can buy as an alternative - its more effective. I asked my vet about feeding alternatives and he said he would rather feed bute as it has been through extensive tests/research and has been used for years whereas other medications which you can buy over the counter have not been subjected to the same rigorous examinations.

we have a ex 4 star horse on vetrofen and i use vetroflex google it see if you think it would help it is supposed to be brill product but i do buy off e bay as very expensive. i also use vetrofen on my old border collie and she could hardly get up from lying down its made her very comfortable and rejuvenated lol
