Ok so Pidge is on 1/2 satchet am and 1/2 satchet pm of bute whilst his Hock Spavin fuses. He's now been back in work 9 days and touch wood is sound and is working well, just in walk and trot on a surface (bar him peeing off with me at canter the other night

).
So bearing in mind he is 17hh and nearlly 600kg how much lameness will the bute be masking? Vet is coming back out on the 6th June to see how he is progressing, do I need to take him off the bute a few days before vet comes out?
Vet did say the bute is just short term whilst the hock fuses, so not a permanent use.

In my limited experience Pidge, 1/2 a sachet twice a day won't be masking much in the grand scheme of things.

I would think that if he is working in trot, with only a minimal amount of bute then he wouldn't be a great deal of discomfort but as you know, just keep an eye on it.

Good to hear that Pidge is improving.

I agree, at that size on on the amounts of bute he is on I would have thought that you would see more discomfort than you are experiencing if there was much pain. Someone said to me that bute is like an anadin...

It is difficult to say. Quite often you can think such a small amount of bute is not doing anything when actually it is doing quite a lot. Having said that it does seem a very small quantity for a large horse. It would be interesting to withdraw it for several days and see what happens WRT his movement. But I would phone the vet up and ask first - You don't want to take him off it without vet's advice....It may be important to keep any inflammation in the area down esp as he is having other injections.....

thanks everyone, not having really used bute before I wasn't sure what quantaties were used to suppress pain and lameness.
On Wednesday he worked really well and we did get some good work at the trot, where he actually used himself properly and grew to a good 17.3hh

so have been concentrating on getting him to work properly as have been told by using his back end rather than working on the forehand will be better for him with this problem.
Will ring the vet on Monday and see what he says about taking him off the bute before he comes to see him again. Would have thought he would need to be off it as how can vet tell how bad or good he is if he is on the bute?
Steep learning curve!
Another bit of advice please, I can get him to work properly at walk and trot in the schools, but not when hacking, he is too nosey

hack in either loose ring kk with flash, or pelham with two reins and cavesson but neither work, any tips or is it acceptable to just get him striding out?
