Bute equivalent

My pony is currently on box rest for a snapped digital flexor tendon and has been on bute for the past 3 weeks. It is incredibly expensive for him to be going through it like he is but is not at all comfortable with out it. I am wondering if anyone has used anything as an equivalent pain killer. It just needs to keep him comfortable and keep the pain at bay.

He isn't particularly fussy and feeding time is his favourite part of the day at the moment so i don't worry too much about him being picky with strong smelling ingredients.

I think bute, not danilon, is about the cheapest option for general pain relief and with a serious injury such as this it is not a time to be trying to cut costs with alternatives most of which will work out more expensive and may be less effective, you can ask for a prescription and buy online, £79 for 100 on vio vet at the moment, there may be cheaper options if you search.
The other option may be to inject but I think bute cannot be given intramuscularly so this may not be an option.
 
He obviously needs it, there is nothing cheaper or herbal that will give him the benefit. Ask you vet if you can be given a prescription to buy online, as others have mentioned.
 
My horse has been on Bute for years. He has coffin joint arthritis. He has just one sachet per day which keeps him mobile enough to hack out every day. When I questioned whether other non prescription meds were a better idea I was told by my Vet that Bute has been extensively tested with good results whereas other products have not undergone similar rigorous testing. He also told me that some of the non prescription meds have been shown to affect the heart rhythm so I opted to keep him on Bute.
I agree with Be Positive, this is not the time for trial and error experiments. Good luck, hope he improves.

This is very true .
Herbal products can at best be a waste of your money and at worse could be harmful as they need to have non of the testing drugs have .
Just because something's a plant does not mean it's safe to feed or that it has a beneficial result .
 
A friend's horse was put on 'dog tablets' as a bute alternative. They are called Previcox (there is a horse version of the same drug, Firocoxib, called Equioxx which is much more expensive). The horse only needed quarter of a tablet per day I think and apparently it works out miles cheaper than bute. You have to have a vet who is prepared to prescribe them for you though as it is technically against the law to prescribe the small animal formulation for horses.
