As per vets advice, Ken is on a 2 week bute trial for an unknown mild lameness before seeing if we need to go down the route of investigations.

The schedule was 2 x a day for a week, drop to 1 x a day for a week and then stop bute and see if there is a difference at each of these stages.

Friday was the last day he had 2 and we dropped to 1 from Saturday. It is now Tuesday - how long would you expect it to take for the levels in his system to drop enough that any difference would be noticeable?

He was sound on 2 x a day and was sound when trotted up yesterday on 1 (trotted up yesterday evening before feeding and last bute will have been the evening before so 24hrs) but not wanting to get over excited just yet in case it takes a while for the "drop" to kick in.

My chiro vet wants a minimum of 48 hours to have elapsed since a horse's last sachet of Danilon when she comes to treat them, but I play safe and leave it 72 hours.

She sees them walk and trot in a straight line, then walk, trot and canter on the lunge. She need a horse to show pain if it needs to.

So maybe allow 72 hours to be fairly sure, which you have now since dropping from 2 per day to 1 per day.

Good luck.

I was also told that you need 48 hours from the last dose. I think you need at least 7 days to be safe for drug testing at competition.

Thank you very much both, exactly what I wanted to know. I guess the next few days will be the tell if anything is to change between 2 and 1 a day

The real difference should be shown once your horse has not had any bute for at least 48 hours. In the past I have found bute trials to be pretty useful, particularly for the 'not feeling quite right' things.

Second this.

See what happens but when he’s been off bute is the real teller.
